I've never heard of this airline. Launching once weekly PKC-ANC. According to release, it is focusing on tourism. I thought there would be oil traffic as well.

When was the last time there was scheduled Alaska-Russia Far East service? In the 1980s with AS? I am curious about the chances of success for this route.

Yes they got DOT approval bit back.
At the time they said they would do flying 1x weekly with 132 seat 737-700 and if demand warranted shift to 757.

SU flew KHV-ANC-SEA-SFO-SEA-ANC-KHV and VVO-ANC-SEA-LAX-SEA-ANC-VVO up until 2002. VVO was IL62 until 06/2001 then switched to TU154. KHB was mixed between IL62 and TU154 until the end.

Would that mean that SEA was the only US lower 48 city to have seen scheduled Tu-154 service? Too bad I missed those days.

Geographically it makes alot of sense and connects the great land bridge. I don't believe there are any public ferries that would cross...

Reeve Aleutian Airlines flew regularly from Anchorage to Petropavlosk and Yuzhno-Sakhalin until their bankruptcy in December, 2000, I took their last flight, was left stranded on Sakhalin, had to come home to IAH via Moscow on Domodedovo, then Lufthansa.

Does this mean that the U.S. and Russia may start easing their visa policies towards one another? I've never tried, but I've heard that getting a visa in either direction is a very daunting task...if they're trying to stimulate tourism, either that's going to need to change (if what I've heard is correct) or this isn't going to go very well...

I wouldn't call getting a Russian visa daunting; time consuming, expensive and a pain in the ass, yes! Daunting no! Or is is that different for Americans?

I was excited to see another aircraft type coming into ANC, but as mentioned before the flight will be operated by a B737-700. Seasonal service July 12-Sept 13 2012. Scheduled arrival time Thursdays at 0550, departing same day at 0730.

To take this flight isn't cheap. I just queired the Yakutia website for flights in July and August and the cheapest economy fare is
USD$ 2,416 round-trip (for a 4.5 hour trip on a 737). This would make it seem that the target pax isn't the leasure traveler.

Remember when that Aeroflot IL-62 had its tail clipped by an Asiana 744 in Anchorage? That poor IL62 never flew again, was moved to an area near the Everts Ops are and slowly rotted away next to C-119s until it was finally scrapped in the early 2000s.
For years there was an check-in desk and placard in the N Terminal at ANC for Magadan Air, listed a once weekly departure for Magadan but all the times I was at the N Terminal coming or going on DL, never saw anyone at that counter and never saw any Magadan Air plane in ANC.

I'm not sure. I would suspect that means it is for leisure.
That is high-spending/ luxury adventure tourism. Alot of it at the moment (e.g. all the Antarctic cruises etc.)
Otherwise what other market would there be (oil is unlikely to be operating in the region) ?

Hasn't there been talk recently that Russia wants to start a visa-free tourist travel regime with the United States in order to stimulate tourism? I heard that the only reason it isn't implemented is that Russian law requires the other country to reciprocate the visa-free travel for Russian citizens, and the US State Dept has said that Russia does not yet qualify for consideration for entry into the Visa Waiver Program.
It'd be cool if visa-free travel for tourists between the USA and Russia happens, though. I'd love to visit Russia!
