It would certainly look great; My gut feeling is that TK will go for 748s. We will find out soon I guess.

Yes all we can do is hope   Just think it would be one of the best A380 interiors if TK got them .

Maybe our Istanbul friends tell us if there is any room for 748s at IST.
Can IST handle half a dozen 748s in the next 5+ years?
Do you need special gates for the type, how many @ IST can handle at once?
Thanks.

If my memory serves correctly 208 and 226 can accommodate A380, so they can serve 748. 218 and 219 may too because there are big separation between these two gates.

Forget to mention; Gates may be available but open park spaces are very limited. Due to its lenght 748 may not fit into 777 spaces as R1 and R2. Only available space is de icing area I guess.

IST is a CAT E airport which does NOT allow any aircraft of category F (A380). If I'm not mistaken the 748 is also classified as Cat F.

I was looking around TK's website because of the $525 round trip fares from JFK - IST.

I thought "to the Istanbul" was bad until I read...

"We are offering special prices from United States to Istanbul - Economy Class. Airline Tickets from 1285 USD via Turkish Airlines, Best Airlines in Europe experience. Enjoy your flight with best catering, seat and inflight service experience."
http://www.turkishairlines.com/en-us...ers-from-united-states-to-istanbul

The english is bad and the price written doesn't accurately reflect the promotional fares. When will they hire a native english speaker? When I was on TAMs website a few weeks ago everything was accurate in English, German, and Spanish.

Yes 380 is F is and came with a special permission.

748 is a bit more complicated, it is F too but many cat E airports allow to operate 748 because it is just above cat E. Here is a document about this situation

According to Irish Sunday Business Post Turkish Airlines might be interested in Aer Lingus

Sadly they again won two "Golden Spider/Altin Örümcek" awards this year. Apart from embarrassing language issues simple tasks such as (seat selection, special meal orders, adding FF details) are still not possible. Real shame...

But just with LOT, TK would not be able to hold a majority stake? I wonder how EY will react if this move is serious.

I flew to NYC and back on 17/23 june by TK 1 and TK 2 economy here is couple of notes about my trip:

1) First time in 777 and I loved the plane .I find the back of the plane very quiet can anyone confirm that?
2) Service was not excellent but not bad either. I also think that food was very ordinary. As a matter of fact lasagna not advisable .First leg economy was probably 90 percent LF . On the way back not a single empty seat ..
3)After experiencing JFK passanger and luggage handling , I appreciated Ataturk airport operations. How come cell phone usage is forbidden in JFK passport check area is a question for me .
4) IFE was generally good on movie selection but music was below my expectations (ı am a classic rock listener )
5) First leg operated 1.5 hour late due to passenger problem (?) second leg was 2.5 hours delayed due to slow handling of luggages by the staff.
6) Can somebody tell me in very basic terms what is ground speed ? I saw 1020 km/hour
7) In flight wifi works perfectly communicating thru facebook mesages was lovely.
8) 2 of the 3 pilots were extremely young guys I would say early 30s if not late 20s.
9) If you ever take a cab from city to JFK dont let the drivers turn on the meter. It is also 45 dollars . He tried to cheat me but hey I am an ex yellow cab driver in nyc

I am sure there are better explanations but simply it is the speed your plane flies in the airmass plus the speed of the airmass. Let's say when you fly from JFK to IST the plane has 850 km/h airspeed plus has a tailwind of 200 km/s (which pushes the plane towards Istanbul direction relative to the ground) that sums up to 1050 km/s.

Another example: You travel from Istanbul to Ankara on a train. The train travels with 100 km/h and from the back of the train you start running (with 10 km/h) to the front end of the train. Even though your speed on the train is 10 km/h, your ground speed is 110 km/h since the train moves towards Ankara too.

Flew last Friday intra-Europe. Food was disappointing.

It is about timing. TK11 arrives late and not a soul at JFK immigration & customs at that time. About cell phone usage, as soon as you touch the runway you can make phone calls in the US. ( I am afraid TK does not know this, they still insist you turn it on while inside the terminal). So this gives you about 1/2 hour to make all your calls, from the time the plane lands, taxi, deplane, walking toward the customs area. Then you are also allowed when waiting for luggage. I am sure the answer to your question is the always easy....."because of security risk".
I always get a "Welcome home, sir.." from passport control. What an incredible nice thing to hear at any border.

Soon to go up to $52. Always get a receipt which has the taxi medallion number. Don't argue with the cab driver, just call the Taxi and Limousine Commission, complain about the driver and ask for a refund.

There are several reason, but they basically go back to safety, for instance by limiting ability of passengers to gain outside information, conspiring to smuggle, coordinating with others inside, etc. Also its not just cell phones, but cameras are also banned an no photos of agents or facilities are allowed.

And the US is not the only one with such rules. They have it in Canada, and I have noted similar in several places in in Asia/Pacific region (Japan, Australia ?)

For the record, such regulations also exist at other government facilities also, such as court, and even the post office where you are also not technically allowed to talk on the phone while at the counter
