News feeds reporting TWO ATR planes inside, probably completely destroyed.

Terrible news for OK, loosing two planes in their not-so-good finantial situation. This might bring them down....

Explosions were supposedly heard prior to fire, terrorist attack ruled out by police. Reported in one injured, not sure how badly. No casualties reported.

I will keep you updated

The explosions could be from the aircraft fuel tanks exploding. Airplanes inside a hanger fire usually do not do so good, several B-707s were destroyed that way.

If an expolsion was heard prior to the fire, chances are it was an airplane that exploded for whatever reason, there could be many. This could have started the fire.

From the picture, the fre looks bad, but it is most likely not as bad as it looks. There is a lot of smoke in the picture, and it is clear the ramp lights atop the hanger are still on, those are not flames.

Modern hangers have fire surpression systems.

Thank God there isn't any injuries or fatalities.

Would the insurance cover the loss of these Atrs? That is, if they are really destroyed...

Yes, if the hanger owner has insurance, which he should have. But, if the explosion/fire was caused by the airplanes, then the airlines insurance has to pay for damage to the hanger.

Official press release by CSA Czech Airlines:

One injured person, no casualties, only ONE, but severely damaged plane, an ATR-42 belonging to OK, reg. OK-KFM. Probably a write-off.
No info on the probable causes.

Very very sad story!!!

Unfortunate rather than very sad; it would have been very sad if anyone had died; hopefully the injured person will recover quickly. Czech Airlines can always buy/lease more ATRs, but lives can't be replaced!

Its very sad that plane(s) might have been destroyed, however it would be devastating if people lost their lives.. Can always replace and Airbus, Boeing, ATR but you can never replace a human life.

Things certainly look grim in the photo. Hopefully all people affected recover quickly. I would have thought that a newer hanger as that looks to be would have had a foam suppression system to stop things from getting out of hand, but of course that is hindsight talking. One only has to look at the Hangar 40 BRU fire in 2006 to see that this sort of thing happens despite modern standards. One hopes that between the insurance on the building and the insurance that would have been on the aircraft that OK will come out err well ok.

Indeed. It looks brutal >Quoting Checo77 (Reply 6):

That is sad   From the looks of the hanger, I'm certain that plane won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

I photographed it at PRG less than a fortnight ago, and got the whole fleet. So glad I got it now.

Possibly worth noting the particular ATR-42 is leased from Air Contractors.

Most likely scrapyard will be the final destination. Picture of what's left of the ATR42: http://www.planes.cz/lite/newsp.php?20609_n3?www.pozary.cz and video: http://youtu.be/Q0gsePE0eQU

The video also appears to show an Armavia narrrowbody of some variety (either an Airbus A32X or a Sukhoi Superjet) in the hangar. I hope it survived.

Sadly, Armavia lost an aircraft( A320 registered EK-32010) in that hangar fire.

I thought from the original pic that it was fire we could see across the top of the hangar, but it seems they're just lights. The hangar itself seems undamaged, could just have been the plane itself that caught fire.

Airplanes don't start burning for no reason, most of times when this happens in a hangar, the human element is behind the unfolding.

I've seen so many boys go into unventilated aircraft tanks with unsealed 230V inspection lamps. The thought alone made me shiver. I called them to caution but after being called a woos several times, I figured that with that small a survival instinct, why should I bother when something else would end up killing them anyway.

That was a bad year for Armavia, because they also lost an A320 in a crash into the Black Sea that year.

It has happened a few times; Qatar Airways lost an A300F in a hangar fire at AUH a few years after the BRU accident and I think KLM lost a DC8 in a hangar fire at AMS in the 1960s.

This might sound like an ignorant question, however, in todays day and age don't most modern day hangars have fire suppression systems.... Even some of the oldest hangars here in the USA have fire suppression systems.....

Just a little more damage than speed tape can cover up. Yeap, it is scrap metal now.

Based on the damage to the plane and lack thereof to surrounding areas, I think it's safe to conclude the plane itself that was on fire, not the hangar.

Holy crap, it's just the tail...I'm not even sure if the scrapyard would take something as horribly charred as that

Several others also, including a Saudia DC-8-61 (leased from US charter carrier Overseas National) lost in a hangar fire at LUX in 1981.

The KLM DC-8 lost in the hangar fire at AMS in June 1968 was the aircraft below. It was in VIASA livery (wet-leased I believe) at the time of the fire.

This Lloyd Aero Boliviano 707-323C (ex-AA) was destroyed in a hangar fire at Dothan, Alabama (DHN) in 1991. I think it was being repainted at the time.

The first A340 written off was an AF A340-200 undergoing maintenance at CDG in 1994. It caught fire just after being towed out of the hangar. It was only a few months old at the time.

Definitely not a good weekend for Czech civil aviation. A privately owned L-29 crashed early Sunday afternoon , killing the pilot instantly and the passenger/customer who got the ride as a birtday gift died later in the hospital.
