WN 738s Coming To MCO

Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:54 pm

I'm booking a trip to Las Vegas for the middle of July and one of my options is ISP-MCO on a 737-300 and MCO-LAS on a 737-800! Just a heads up for anybody at either end. Plus, two of my other options through BWI were 738s, too! How many are they going to have in their fleet by July 10?!

16 will be in service by July if I'm not mistaken. 33 by the end of the year.

Are WN pilots certified to fly all variants of the 737? Because I was chatting with my pilot of my flight the other day and we were on a -700 and he had flown -300s and -500s.

Yes, for a short answer. They, like us mechs., have to take a short "fam." training class to instruct the differences of the -800. There aren't many differences.

It must be cool to be a pilot who has flown the smaller variants for so long and shows up to the airport and sees a 738 at his gate.

Oh they know a little in advance but I'm sure it's cool. I know when we took delivery of the first one here in DAL everyone was wanting to see it. Of course there was a party. Probably the last one I'll see for a while unless I have to go downline to fix one.

I bet you'll see LOTS of them in 2014, when the Wright Amendment is finally dissolved. I'm sure looking forward to that!

I've heard from a flight attendant friend at LAS who works for G4 interviewing for WN. She flippantly said she'd only host 738's. She was told in the interview that was not going to be a problem. Aside from Florida market they're mainly going to be from hub/hub transport (for now). LAS-OAK, LAS-MDW, LAS-BWI, LAS-PHX, LAS-HOU, LAS-ATL

I bet they said that would not be a problem because she doesn't have a chance in hell in getting hired! Only work the -800? What if there is an equipment sub? Or she gets an OAK or PHX trip as a reserve? WN, just like any airline, wants to hear you are eager to work EVERY aircraft they operate. That's what they mean when they ask if you are flexible. I seriously doubt she gets an invitation to training with that statement. The interviewers probably laughed their butts off when she left the room.

Cheers,
Drew MCO

Those are long gone. Most turns now, even on the -300s, are 35-40 minutes.

I flew on a -700 on Thursday and we landed in Baltimore and were SCHEDULE to be there from 7:20am to 8:25am! It wasn't a problem for me, as the pilot gave me a tour of the cockpit and let me check out the electronics!

I'm assuming Southwest won't have the magic slides in these, right? Not that it matters much, you'd still be hard-pressed to turn a full -800 in under 40 minutes even under the most ideal of conditions.

No magic carpet in the -800s which will cut down on weight and fuel consumption. I can see 2 ramp agents in the bins now though instead of the standard 1.

Longer connects in the "hubs" are for connecting passengers. Not just the ability to turn the plane.

I'm sorry that sounds completely made up. I just can't see anyone ever making demands like that in a job interview.

With SWA having 300, 500 , 700 and 800 and the 800 being the aircraft just brought onto the property. That gives SWA over 500 aircraft. Some cities do not even see the 800 yet, so the chances of a NEW HIRE flying the 800 only are SLIM and NONE. When you are first hired you sit reserve and you get somewhat of a choice of what you fly but not much. Due to operational changes, you go where you are needed. You could do the Texas two step and fly within Texas or you could get a coast to coast routing. That statement about the 800 was just stupid and there is no cure for stupidity.

That would be a funny thing to say since she had to have interviewed before WN even got its first -800's. Interviews for external candidates haven't taken place for several months.

Is SWA using the LAS hub as a "staging point" (more or less) for their new 800's coming online? I've seen them here A LOT and I'm curious if they're utilizing them at their other hubs aside from just flying LAS-MDW, BWI, MCO, etc. Are they flying them from MDW or BWI to other cities as well?

They are supposed be sending one RON at MHT pretty soon. I'm interested to see if they'll ever make it to PVD or ISP.

Well, being in HR I can tell you this type of statement is made by high maintenece candidates on a daily basis. They never get hired.
