This confirms a deal which was previously reported on May 1, Bombardier won the order over ATR.
"Bombardier Aerospace announced today that WestJet, an Alberta partnership, has signed a conditional order for
20 Q400 NextGen turboprops. The transaction also includes options on an additional 25 Q400 NextGen aircraft. Order based on list price for the 20 is ~$683m."

No, but it's always nice to hear the news if you're associated with either of the two companies, that's for sure. Always a good morale booster for company pride in a 'down economy.'
And if you're into stocks - always nice to buy a little bit here and there in advance of the announcement and see if it goes up in value.

This is old news. The big question now is where will they fly them first (east/west canada) and what the new destinations be once they are done subbing out 737's and replacing with Q4's.

So can this order be added to Bombardier's order book as a done deal, or does it still need to be "firmed" up at a later date?

I'd say their first destinations, (considering that with the exception of Calgary and Fort McMurray is all contracted ground crews) might be those cities where the ground crews have experience handling other airlines' Q400s? i.e. in YYJ, Canwest handles Horizon Air. Though nothing all the training and purchasing of new ground equipment can't help in the months of preparation that'll no doubt be put forth for the first Q entering service.

Not much new equipment needed, only need 1 beltloaderro to load a Q400, but I guess they would need the dc ground power units.

Would they not keep the 600's for their routes in Alberta?
The Q400's may be used in the Ontario market, or to expand from YWG to other points around Western Canada not including YYC and YEG. I doubt they would expand in eastern Canada unless they set up something at YHZ.

I read the -600s do ok for them.
If not, I'm sure the US Government will take them for LAS flights into the desert like the rest of them.

Also need a portable ramp in the event of flying customers who need the aisle chair, unless they go the 'brute strength' method of getting it up the stairs. And the bottom lip of the door tends to necessitate a small step. And the forward cargo door will need a set of stairs to access properly. But the belt loader, carts, etc. can definitely be used universally.

When I was involved with Westjet ('99-'05), I had asked about the YQL route. At the time they were studying an East/West route: YWG - YQR - YQL - YLW - YVR. That route would have restored and extended the YQL-YLW-YVR route that Time Air did with their Dash 7's & 8's. The route was dropped with reorganizing under the Canadi>n Regional banner. I believe that YQL is "on the radar", but whether they are served East-West, or North-South will be a guess for a while.
Regardless, congrats to Westjet and Bombardier. Good to see the Dash flying in Canadian skies for the foreseeable future!
