EK has been loading an additional number of A388 upgauges as the airline will shortly start taking delivery of a number of additional frames. Recent and upcoming equipment upgauges include:

01JUL - NRT
01AUG - AMS
06OCT - MEL AKL
01DEC - JNB (reinstatement of A388 service)
01DEC - DME
01JAN - CDG (second daily frequency)
01JAN - JFK (second daily frequency)
01FEB - LHR (fourth daily frequency)

When does:

LHR go five daily?
LGW get their first?
SIN get their first?
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

SIN already receives a daily A380 doesn't it? I was at Changi just under two weeks ago and I saw a EK A380.

Also when does BKK go triple daily? If additional European cities (especially DME) get A380s, they'll need to up-gauge BKK quickly.

I'd expect MAN to be upgraded to a second daily A380 sometime within the next 12-18 months. Also it wouldn't surprise me to see one of the 77W flights upgraded to A388 at BHX, but this is at least 2-3 years off yet I'd imagine.

I'm pretty sure we'll soon have EK A380s in all major destinations (those 90 airframes gotta go somewhere!) ... and the poor 77Ws and puny 332s would be relegated to second tier cities only!!!

That certainly answers the questions "what the hell is EK going to do with 90 A380s on order!"

I expect SFO, MAD, GRU, SIN, KUL (additional), Osaka, to go A380s in the future.

SIN has 4 daily frequencies. A388 equipment may not be a priority. The latest addition to SIN is still operating with 77L so that one can be upgauged to 77W first if additional capacity is needed.

They will launch this by 01. Dec 2012 and the second DXB-DME-DXB (EK 133/134) will be done and replaced from the A345 to the B77W!

I doubt that they will be able to fill a 380 vs. 345/77W on this route. But sure a great time to experience the ground handling till UN/TSO receive there 380's in DME!!! Actually they are building and doing many changes at DME.

Wow A380 to Moscow. And so many American posters have derided the airline's huge order for so many years now, as if it was a nonsensical folly. Very interesting.

Makes total sense from the European Russian Asia traffic history and growth.

The fifth daily A388 flight to LHR has now been announced from October 28. At that time, the EK007/008 rotation, which leaves DXB in the 3 am departure bank will upgauge to A388, so by 01FEB13 all 5 LHR flights will operate with A388.

Very impressive, but sadly less interesting from an enthusiast / spotter viewpoint  I wish they had kept a nice daytime B77W rotation just to give us the variety (and allow EK B77Ws to be logged / photographed).

Won't be long before A380s at LHR are routine and boring.

Qatar made mention of Boston some time ago...a general 'We'd-Like-to-Go-There' rather than a specific service announcement. Is EK enough of a competitor to Qatar so that they'd pull the rug out from under them and start Boston themselves with a long-range 777? Are EK's planes too big for Boston? I don't believe the very first 787s for Qatar are pegged for Boston, so what's the likelihood of EK jumping in before them?

I dont doubt EK will add a sixth frequency at LHR if they can get the slot, and that'll be 773/W I'd have thought so dont worry too much.

With all these routes being upgauged with A380s I wonder what the chances are that DFW or SEA get upgraded to 77W equipment. They are currently once daily 77L (albeit fairly new routes).

Question, is EK limited to 7X/week at Moscow?

So when will SQ upgauge their DXB-Moscow flight to the A388?

Quoting HB-IWC (Reply 12):

Thank you.

Question: Is LGW constrained by the size of the business class lounge? In my opinion, the 5th LHR flight has less demand than the top LGW flight, but that is just my un-informed opinion. However, filling an A380 is more than just flying it to an airport.

Quoting eagle125 (Reply 17):

EK is short of the highest MTOW 77Ws. IMHO, when the mid-2013 high MTOW A388 with wing twist and engine PIP enter EK's fleet, it will help displace long haul 77Ws for IAH, DFW, IAD, and later SEA.

In many ways, EK's long haul expansion has been 'handicapped' by having a number of A388s out for wing crack repairs. Once those repairs complete (I assume in 2013, for the 'final fix' on the last airframes) we should see a surge of 77Ws freed up that were substituting on what EK wanted to be A388 routes.

Quoting ChrisNH (Reply 14):
Is EK enough of a competitor to Qatar so that they'd pull the rug out from under them and start Boston themselves with a long-range 777?

After QR entered IAH?    However, I do not see BOS being launched by EK soon. QR will have a short term advantage with the 788 deliveries.

Quoting vincewy (Reply 4):

Eventually. But in some ways that is growing other hub waves first. A bummer EK has a shortage of A388s due to the wing cracks. That issue will pass soon. I'm wondering how spectacular the 'slingshot growth' will be once all the A380s come out of the shop with the final repair.

HKG is due to receive additional A380 frequencies as well. currently it's 11 A380 services out of 21 weekly, with the rest 77W.

Amusing how there is now more need for EK A380 service than the question 'where will they fly them to.'

IMHO, the next 24 months of EK A380 deliveries will easily find homes and that is without A380 flights to the LAX, SFO or GRU/EZE. If those cities receive A380 service, it would easily tie up another ten! (using 2.5 A388s per daily frequency).

It's been in there once already. No need for the A380 to be anywhere near MTOW for a 9 hour flight I would'nt have thought. The only thing stopping BHX having one appears to be a slight reluctance by them to introduce F class out of BHX; on the face of it, BHX would have been slighly more logical for that treatment than GLA based on how EK has generally operated out of the UK regions.

Alternatively, it may be a case of BHX going 3 daily within the next 12 to 18 months and then getting an A380 after a further 18 to 24 months.

SQ's flights are only 5x/weekly. Based on my own personal experience on SQ 61/62, they could upgauge the flight from a 77W to an A380 to add capacity and capture more DME traffic. When I took the flights, the majority continued on to SIN or IAH, respectively, while a handful got on and off at DME. Yet, they should bring the flight back to daily before upgauging.

Also, at IAH SQ usually parks at D11 while LH is at D12, the new A380 gate and both flights arrive and depart around the same time. Yes there will be a new A380 gate, yet if SQ, EK, AF, or BA so happens to upgauge the IAH flight to an A380, the airport will need at least 2 more A380 gates.

I'm wondering if Gate 14 would serve as the A380 gate since it's one of the dual bridge gates at DME.

Well - the runway at BHX is 2600m currently - what sort of penalty would that be for the A380?
When I was working back in UK I was actually involved in looking at the runway extension for BHX, and the extension was needed to allow 777s to work at MTOW - or at least this was the loading criteria I was designing to (though this was before the A380 entered revenue service)
