I have worked at many airports in my life (MDW,CVG,ORD,IND,ATL,PIT) and I really cant see this really happening.And letting him shadow her seriously?

Working at an airline, especially at a relatively small station like OMA, is like high school. Breakroom talk -- everyone knows everything, and word gets around quick. I find this interesting. He had a fake airport badge and shadowed an agent. However one quick question about what his file number was should have turned them on. If he was trying to non-rev, I wonder how that would have worked.

The gate agent allowed someone to piggy back in to secured areas ? He didn't have a local airport badge or visitors badge and the agent didn't check with her manager or supervisor ?

What happens to him depends on if that Portland SIDA badge is real or not.
If it's a fake, then he broke Federal Laws and is in deep doo doo.
If it's real, then all he did was enter secured areas without permission. Not too awfully bad.
I wonder if UA will "no fly list" him because of this?

That is what I thought too. And all the internal acronyms that get thrown around....just having someone stare back at me when using one of the many division codes would have tipped me. I dunno...I think there is more to the story folks.....someone else is involved and 'covered'. Be interesting to see how this unfolds

This guy was a former airline employee, he knew what he was doing was wrong. I was a ramp/customer service for a few years, and as a gate agent I would never let someone watch me on my computer other than co-workers. Also as a non rev getting stuck in major hubs like ORD, and LAX a lot, you get to know a lot of the gate agents, pilots, and flight attendants. On several occasions I would get stuck, see a agent or pilot I knew and was told to follow them to the crew room for the night, but declined since I didn't have a sida badge for that airport. After a couple of years, at my station I started doing a lot of TDY work at hubs and smaller outstations. I acquired quite the lanyard of airport sida badges. Then I would stay in the crew rooms when getting stuck non reving. This guy should face charges, along with the employees of the airline that allowed this to happen. They also knew this was a big no no.

Sounds like it was a real one, however no longer valid since he left SkyWest (which, contrary to the article, is not a subsidiary of United, but a regional partner).
Which is still a federal offense for him to use it, as it was no longer valid.

If he did receive any perks from UA because of his impersonation then that would be considered "theft of services". UA could file charges against him and then ask for reimbursement for said services on top of that.

I don't understand why people think that. There was literally nothing he could do to get any benefit an employee would get, as that would require an actual record in the system. And employees do not get any special treatment or perks when buying a full revenue ticket.... they are just another passenger.
He wanted to stay current in the business, and did it in the absolute worst way possible. Had he not flashed his badges, it's likely that even if the agent believed his story, that he would not be facing felony charges.

One thing I don't understand is why he still had his badge from working with Sky West at PDX. Wouldn't he have been required to relinquish it when he left his job?
Also, even though my job has no security-related aspects whatsoever, I'd find it odd if a stranger said that he or she wanted to "shadow" me on the job, I'd certainly let my supervisor know.

But seriously I would have cut the guy some slack. I mean what harm has he actually done? He told them he was an employee and hung out for a few weeks, maybe walked into a few secure areas. They should offer this guy a job seeing he's so desperate to work for them! Then he could hang around and walk around wherever he wants without getting in trouble!
Just my opinion based on what limited stuff I read.

If he's attended ANY SIDA training, and it appears he has, he should know that everything he was doing was not only against regulations, but against the law. I feel NO sympathy for him.

Yes, but sometimes an employee just stops showing up and never turns in their credentials. A fine is usually assessed and the badge itself is deactivated, but it's possible that an employee could hold on to it and it would continue to appear perfectly valid until swiped. Of course, anyone who holds on to an ID badge isn't going to be getting a new one (say, if he or she returns to the airport to work for a different employer) anytime soon.

No. If he can't be bothered to go through the traditional and legal means of gaining employment with an airline, who knows what other laws and regulations he'll ignore/disregard just because it would make his life more difficult otherwise? Especially if he already held an airport ID badge, which, as mayor mentioned, would mean that he knew exactly what he was doing.
