Southern Air Flt 9743 Trouble?

While at work this afternoon, I happened to look up and see a large a/c in a race track patten to the SW of the Phoenix metro area. I got on my Flightaware App on my phone and saw that it was Southern Air 9743 with a supposed route from KMJZ to KSUU.
It made at least 6 circuits then I lost sight of it. I just got home, looked it up again and turns out it flew to the west to the AZ/CA border and is now headed back this direction.
Flightaware now has it listed as "Diverted" returning to KMJZ. So I don't know if it was having problems of some sort and dumping fuel or what. Looks like its approaching KMJZ now. Been out there quite a while.

Here's the Link: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SOO9743

What do you think?

Weird, how flightaware shows it with N/A left, but planefinder shows it at 22k feet. Its flight number is in the 9000s so maybe it's a proving/test flight? It's also being operated by n743wa, a World Airways aircraft.

Also, the aircraft is currently untitled, so it could be a crew-familiarization flight before Southern acquires the aircraft?

Could be. Now almost to New Mexico state line. Strange!
But why would they have filed to KSUU in the first place?
And what is the blue dashed line running paralel to it's flight path?

The blue line on Flighaware is the filed route. I've noticed sometimes it changes based on amendments. If you look at a scheduled flight that hasn't departed yet, the blue line will represent the originally filed route. It's actually pretty interesting and is accurate down to the published arrival and departure routes (STARs and SIDs).

Looks like it came out of Evergreen MX in MZJ and it is doing a test flight.

Makes sence. Doing a circuit in SW AZ now.

Why was it on the news if it was just a test flight?

People were freaking out over the circling contrail. That's not often seen so close to town.

I love the title of that article. "Jet's mysterious flight trail leaves some residents puzzled". I know it's not common knowledge for non-aviation junkies but come on!
