Mon Jul 23, 2012 3:40 pm

Doing some current research and wondered if anyone out there might have some insight. Thanks!

Hi!

I don't know the shortest but Gibraltar I think is quite short: 1800m

Many thanks.

Thanks for the fast feedback guys, this is a big help.

Anyone know of a current example of a single class A319 operating a 2 / 2.5 hour sector from a sub 6000' runway?

I found this thread from a few years ago that was helpful: Shortest Runway For Scheduled A319 Operation? (by Mozart Sep 21 2009 in Civil Aviation)

Not answering your question as it's not sub-6000ft, but it is nearly (6000ft): EZY flies GIB-LPL (1193mi) and GIB-LGW (1066mi) and, marginally longer still (6089ft) EZY flies SEN-FAO (1091mi) and SEN-AGP (1060mi). EZY's route JMK-LGW is the longest of all those (1568mi) but its runway is longer (6244ft) but still short. All of those are longer than 2.5 hours.

Anyway, I realise those don't answer your question but they may nevertheless be useful.

Shortest to my knowledge is RWY 27 at JER. DD = 1,645m for take off, 1,554m to land.

Runway length isn't that relative, it's the declared distances you need to be concerned with. You'll also find that the accelerate stop distance and landing distance available are more important than take off run available.

Thanks for all the input.

Although a two class config, it appears that Delta sporadically operates a 110-seat A319 off SNA's 5,701' RWY to ATL. Stage lenth is an impressive 1921 miles with a flight duration of ~4.25 hours.

Another impressive feet for the A319 (not related to short RWY ops) is Spirit operating it btwn FLL & LIM. 2,628 miles and over 5.5 hours with 144 seats.

Amazing machine

Not an A319, but DL operates the 737-700 on EYW (Key West, Florida)-ATL, block time 2:02, 561 nm. EYW runway is 4,801 ft., probably one of the shortest U.S. runways used by mainline jets.

There is also Druk Air who operate a couple of A319s from Paro. The 1,964m runway might not be especially short, but consider the altitude is over 2,200m ASL and it is pretty impressive. Longest route is PBH-BKK at 1,197m but IRRC they are also launching SIN which will be 2,035m.

Delta has operated the A319 at EYW on scheduled ops before, with 15 knot max crosswind (company limit.)

I know we've already identified JMK having a longer than 6000' runway, but the two times I've been there I've had to divert on the JMK-LGW sector, one in an A320 and one in an A319. The A320 we went to MXP and the 319 to ATH. I was told that the runway is too short to take off with all the fuel, all the bags and all the pax. Obviously it's dependent on alot of other factors but still irritating!

The longest 319 flight I've done personally is LGW-PFO and back. Still way over 6000' of runway though.

Thanks........Is one of those a relatively new runway? Last time I flew into SKG, there was only runway (I thought) or only one that was usable.

Not an A319, but NZ operates A320s trans-Tasman from WLG's 6,350ft strip - WLG-MEL is around 4h 15m, I think, and I'm not aware of that ever being a problem. In the past, NZ operated DC8s from the field, and later QF operated 74Ls - subsequently both carriers switched to 762s before moving to narrow bodies at higher frequencies. I believe there are still occasional trans-Tasman flights by NZ 763s. Believe it or not, WLG is a diversion field for larger wide-bodies as well - NZ and BA 742s have landed there, and in the last year or so an NZ 77W did a couple of flights to WLG to show the new aircraft off.

Azerbaijan Airlines operate an A319/A320 direct from ABZ- GYD, 2500 miles, 5hr 30min.

They operated it pre-extension off of 6000 feet and even now it's only 6,400ft.

Four months ago Atlantic Airways took delivery of a 319 for their route between Copenhagen and Vagar on the Faeroe Islands. Shortly earlier the runway at Vagar was lengthened from 4,110 feet (1250 m) to 5,902 feet (1,799 m).

Their 319 is configured for 144 pax and the flight time to CPH is almost exactly two hours.

For years they had a fleet of BAe-146 / ARJ planes for the 4,100 feet runway, and they still keep three ARJs. But back in a distant century Maersk Air operated Copenhagen - Vagar with Boeing 737-200, later 737-500, obviously not at anything near full weight.

Not as impressive as an S7 A320 doing OVB-FRA, a 2,996 sm leg, with a block time of 6 h 55 minutes.

Longest A319 flight i know of is OK from ALA to PRG, 2,924 sm, 6h 45 mins.

It's not an A320 on FRA-OVB anymore. They are now using a 73H.

Due to tunnelling works at the threshold of RWY27 at Gibraltar, the declared distance is shorter. It's approx 1775m for takeoff and 1750m for landing.. Takeoff is approx 5823ft~ for takeoff and 5741ft~ for landing.. I will confirm once I have the exact figures from my friends at the Gibraltar ATC.

...the diversion airfield is in norway, so it is challenging in terms of fuel reserves required on board also.

IIRC they are routed through airports in northern India for refuelling and to pick up pax.

GIB as mentioned is shorter at present due to work in progress. I regularly fly 320s into and out of GIB back to the UK. In the past I've occasionally flown 321s (has basically the same wing but a different flap set up) on the same rotations.

True.

S7 still operates the longest A320 flight, along with U6, on PEK-SVX, (2,719 sm) 6h 15 minutes.

VX's BOS-SFO is just shy of that distance, coming in at 2,704 sm).

SKG has two operative runways snd has seen aircraft as large as the 747 there. One of them is currently being extended into the sea, however delayed due the economic situation there.

I flew SVO-ULN, which is 4649 km, on a SU A320 in 2010. The return, on a OM 738, used about 7h in the air, with groundspeed often below 700km/h. I believe both SU and OM only uses narrowbodies on that route in the winter, as the TOW restriction from ULN's 1330m altitude would be too great on a hot day.
