Ice Pilots... American 777

Tonight while watching Ice Pilots there was a nice shot of an AA 777 on the ramp at Yellowknife... Anyone recall when or why the incident occurred??? Mechanical... Medical...Weather diversion??

I love this show!

Just wondering, for the DC-3 aircraft they fly, would a turbine conversion be cost effective?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't turbines cheaper over time in regards to MX and MX costs?

Maybe the nice folks at P&W Canada can let them use a couple of PT-6's to try out?

Back in my skydiving days, I jumped out of a couple of turbine DC-3's. Smooth, quiet and faster.

The one being discussed here is an AA 777, but a UA 777 did divert to Yellowknife in 2004 on a Europe-SFO flight and required an engine change. The engine had to be trucked to YZF.

There have been at least two DC-3/C-47 programs to convert to PT-6s. The South African Air Force converted 38. Most have since been disposed of but sources indicate that at least 10 are still in service with the SAAF.

Another is the Basler BT-67 conversion program in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I think they've converted around 50. It's not cheap. They quote a base price of $6.5 million, a lot for a 70-year-old airframe. It includes a 40 inch forward fuselage stretch to offset the much lighter PT-6 engines.

I believe about 1 in 5 of the remaining active DC-3s/C-47s are PT-6 conversions.
