Alaska 738 Seating Configs

Mon Aug 06, 2012 4:46 pm

I searched the forum but didn't see an answer, I'm just curious as to why Alaska has three different seating configurations for it's 737-800 fleet, my initial thought was that perhaps the ETOPS aircraft were configured in a separate manner, but that still wouldn't explain a third seating configuration. The only difference appears to be the addition of a extra row of seats left side of row 33.

I only know of two configurations. Their first two 738s were delivered with only 2 aft lavatories. Customer and flight attendant complaints resulted in them switching to 3 aft lavatories on all the future deliveries.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

There are three seating configurations:
1: N546AS has two aft lavs, a extra row in front of the over wing exits (row 12) and one less in the back, no row 32. 160 seats total.
2: N548AS has two aft lavs and the same seating configuration as the rest of the fleet except for three extra seats (32/A/B/C) 160 seats total.
3: The rest all have three aft lavs and no 32/A/B/C. 157 seats total.

Four lavatories on a 157-seat B738 - that's very generous. We have three for 186 pax and we seldom hear complaints even when the queue is looong...

So would I be correct in saying N546AS & N548AS have F16Y144 and the remainder of the fleet have F16Y141?

To be correct, the AS 738 fleet has two configurations:

N546AS, N548AS and N549AS have 16F/144Y with 3 total lavatories (1 forward & 2 aft).

N551AS and newer have 16F/141Y with 4 total lavatories (1 forward & 3 aft).

WestJet has 3 lavatories on their 738s for 166 seats.

Do 548 and 549 have the old style F seats like 546 has? I'm always thrilled to fly 546 (or a 737-900) since the seats in F aren't like sitting on concrete.

Two lav. configurations, but three seat configurations.

Your right, I missed N549AS.

Only 549 has the same seats as 546.

AS is running them on 6 hour + flights to Hawaii. They need the extra lav!

What's the difference between flying an AA 738 on a 6 1/2 hr flight from BOS to LAX than an AS 6 hr flight from SEA-HNL? Why is it so much different that AS flies them to Hawaii? Plenty of US Airlines are operating similar 738's and 320's with only three lavs on flights that are just as long. Heck, Southwest flies BWI transcon's with only three lavs and more seats. What's the difference? None. There is no difference. AS is one of the only US airlines to give up seats to passenger convenience. End of story.

We are flying ours on 7,5-hour flights to DXB with three lavs  . I'm not criticizing AS, I agree that it is a great amenity for pax and crew, and it obviously pays off as AS are reporting profits all the time. Good on AS, in other words

I assume there will be four lavs on the new B739ER? Perhaps five?
