Qatar A320 With Sharklets

Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:49 pm

4 days ago i was in a visit to TLS airport and I saw the A320 test plane with sharklets and then right after for my surprise I saw an A320 fully painted in QR colors and with a very good looking sharklets....

When is going to be deliver?? will it be the first one??

the plane were parked right in front of the ATR assembly line.

I saw also 4 to 5 Caribbean Airlines ATR´s parked around, that´s very strange to have so many planes over there so I guess they might have some kind of issue as well..

If i remember correctly, this indeed will be the first sharklet Bus to be delivered! Must say that it looks awesome on the A320, and im really looking foreward to see the first A321 with this new set-up.

Its due to be delivered 4Q this year.. although im not 100% sure!

I believe NZ will be the next to receive the A320Sharklet, also 4Q.

Your bird is cn5182 and will become A7-AHV. According to Planespotters.net it first flew on 17 July 2012. I have no idea when it's due to be delivered, but it is indeed the first A320(WL) to be delivered to an airline.

I do have another question to add to the discussion; will all the proceeding Qatar A320s be equipped with Winglets/Sharklets?

They do at least have A321's with sharklets ordered to replace their 757's.

So AY doesnt have any A321NEO's on order? Will the A321WL really be able to replace the 757 bearing in mind that AY uses their 757 on some really long routes.

Correct.

AY will mostly use them on leisure flights like they do with the 757. I don't know what they are going to do for example with the HEL-YYZ route or can A321WL make it nonstop.

Under current circumstances, no. I don't know if the winglets will significantly boost its range or not, and even then there would be little room for error. Diversions to Gander, Halifax, and Montréal may become much more common.

I thought B6 was getting the first ones..... Didn't they loan Airbus a test plane for this project at some point?

Not a chance westbound. Maybe eastbound on a good day. They will probably have to set up an enroute stop.

I think the B6 test was just the feasibility study. Airbus are testing the new sharklets on several aircraft, both older and new builds

B6 (if I remember correctly) will be the launch customer for the retrofit. Based on my knowledge, a/c getting delivered starting 2013 will have the sharklets.

and I wonder, what about MSN5098, the sharklet test a/c? What airline is it eventually meant for?

Correct, and I assume MSN5182 will be performing some additional tests with Airbus before delivery to QR, as it is the first IAE sharklet a/c (MSN5098 is CFM).

I believe it will be the new standard A320 test plane, after MSN001 was recently retired. Airbus believed that it wasn't enough advanced compared to new build A320's for testing anymore. MSN5098 will highly likely be used as a test frame for some NEO components.

Those sharklets look good. It is a pity than Air New Zealand is no longer the launch customer for Sharkletted-A320s with IAE engines.

They loaned an aircraft (N556JB) to Aviation Partners in 2010 for the testing of their blended winglets. It didn't result in anything.
http://klgb.blogspot.co.nz/2010/02/j...-tests-winglets-again-on-a320.html

Airbus ended up developing its own blended winglets (and called them sharklets). Airbus' A320 testbed MSN001 (F-WWBA) also was fitted with Aviation Partners winglets back in 2008.

I have heard the same as MauriceB. I'm not sure that MSN001 has actually been retired though, can anyone confirm this for sure? I hope she ends up in a museum in France or Germany. The fact that MSN5098 (F-WWIQ) has been painted into the Airbus livery signals that Airbus intends to keep it for the short term at least.

Well, when did NZ cease to be the launch sharklet customer? Weren't they the planned launch customer?

Airbus used our planes as well over the years to test winglet designs:

Caribbean Airlines initially ordered 9 ATR 72-600s. They will only be taking 5 in total, of which 2 have been delivered. The remaining 4 are to be sold to other operators. Two have been taken up so far by Intersky of Germany:
