Another Laser Attack, Cops Targeted Too

Wed Aug 22, 2012 9:23 pm

This one happened last night to a SY charter nearing the end of a KEF-JFK flight, as it overflew Brookhaven Airport (HWV) about 50 miles east of JFK. Just a few days ago two people died in a GA crash at HWV. In any event, in response to the report of the laser attack a Suffolk County PD helicopter flew over the scene to investigate, and itself got "lasered." This one was serious enough that the helicopter pilot and a crew member required medical treatment, though they don't seem to have suffered any eye damage.

Yes, that was quite sad, but at the same time it could have been much worse if the pilot didn't (well, he at least seemed to, not sure if he actually DID) steer away from the houses.

They're still quite high when they're out that far. 8,000, maybe 9,000? Last night the 22's were in use when I left work so that flight had quite a ways to go still, they pass over me at 4,000 or 5,000 when the 22's are in use, I'm out in W. Babylon. That's a heck of a shot to make!

Really hoping this idiot gets caught now.

What is wrong with these people, it seems like an act of terrorism if they are trying to blind a pilot who could potentially crash an aircraft full of passengers. This is one of those crimes that is so messed up that it raises the question of mental health status for the individuals involved.

It sounds from this account as if the perpetrator(s) hung around the area for quite some time after lasering the SY aircraft.

So how does one prevent this?

You could fight fire-with-fire and see if scientists could invent something which doesn't refract lasers in such a way.

Also- what about some sort of military-grade tracing weapon to pin-point where the offender is?

Make buying lasers over certain power levels like buying a firearm: minimum age, background check, registration requirement.

I have been told from friends who work in labs that there are filters that filter out or reduce laser light. Isn't it possible to add that technology to cockpit windows?

The trouble is that it's very hard to catch the folks who do this, so the odds of getting punished are low. As a result, the punishment needs to be very harsh to make up for that. I figure that charging the idiots with attempted murder, one count per person on the plane, would be a good step.

Sounds like a good idea for a startup company I am wishing to begin!!!

This does sound good, however unless they can be convicted of that crime, the message would not be delivered with the same impact. I think if it is called an act of terrorism, that might carry more impact.

That would allow more broader range tactics to find and capture those responsible for these dangerous actions. I think if the persons doing this thought they could end up at Gitmo or be held indefinitely without being charged, they may think before doing something so foolish again.

Hmmm, I like this idea.

Install a sensor array on the aircraft, determine the direction of the incoming laser, return fire with your own laser - only at much higher power. Perpetrator vaporized, problem solved

Sure, it would add some weight / cost but think of the entertainment value for the flight crew

Nah, you just need a laser riding smart bomb/missile... sure the craters might affect local land values but hey
