Visual Of The 744 And 748i Side By Side

Does anyone have a side by side comparison shot of these two beauties? And while at it, any A380 and 748i shots.

I've seen each one up close at different times but can't really fathom the comparative size differences.

Somebody did a comparison shot of two Cargolux birds - LX-SCV (747-400) and LX-VCD (747-8F) at about the same distance and angle.

This doesn't show a side-by-side comparison but you can see the fuselage inserts that resulted in the 747-8. Wingspan is also about 13 ft. greater than the 744.

No way! But the 747 made me willing to become a pilot some day. So even though sistership B77W is a much loved aircraft, my 747 will always stay my heart plane

Pax matter isn't taken into account here

To me, once you've seen a 747 behave, you've understood all what an aircraft must be.

I have done it actually ! I've been a professional pilot for 8 years now... But the B747 is still my favorite and keeps a special place in my heart. I wish I could fly it some day, really.

In my opinion, the nose cabin of the 747 is by far the best place to fly on any current airliner. Nothing can match it for exclusivity. It's also quieter than the upper deck. Not sure what you mean by "too warm". I've been on quite a few 747s in the upper deck and never noticed that. In terms of sound level, I have always considered the 747 quieter than the 777. In fact, I find the 777 slightly louder than most other widebodies, although most people probably wouldn't notice much difference.

My childhood dream was to become an Aer Lingus B747 pilot but alas it was never meant to be. Apart from being too expensive, Aer Lingus no longer operate the B747 so I have had to content myself with being a structural engineer but part of me still always wants to be a pilot.

Whenever a B747 thread comes up, it is always amazing how much sentiment that so many people have to this aircraft. There simply is no other airplane either past or present that stirs such emotion among so many aiviation enthusiasts.

748 is a beauty, finally saw my first pax version this week and saw the F version a bunch of times around SoCal in the past year.

Warmth is really up to the airline in question, can't really blame the airframe for a crew that overheats the plane (a pet peeve of mine, when I sleep in a warm plane, I get a nasty nasty headache, much like a hangover sans the alcohol)

Will the expected A389 be longer than the 748I?

Nothing like the Queen of the skies, the boring twin 777, like all the other boring twins doesn't even compare.

The 747 has personality, it captures the imagination and still makes flying an exciting proposition, for Pilots and passenger alike

I agree. I miss winglets on the 748. And its slightly too long to be perfect. The 744 got everything right.

Yes they have stretched it to much. The proportians is just not right. Seems like they have done a quicky and just slapped on some adittional sections and not thoguht about the overall look ...

Well, any chance of Ryanair purchasing 707s? I'm sure they've asked at AMARG one time or another...

But the 747 remains to be the iconic airliner. When I think of my father's past travels, I can't imagine him not taking a 747.

Agreed. No other aircraft does that, and I doubt we'll see that much enthusiasm for another plane some day soon...

It's an icon in the commercial aviation world. As far as I'm concerned, the 747 is, and always will be, the Queen of the Skies. For many, it is the aircraft that brought the world closer together with excellent seat costs (compared to what was available at the time) bringing fares closer, range to fly across the oceans non-stop, and a high cruise velocity that brought travelling times down. I think most, if not all of us, have flown on a 747 at one point or another.

I hope one day I can get the opportunity to fly on the 747-8.

I think the -800 looks the best. All the other 747s have fan diameters that, proportionally, just look too small. The 800 gets it just right IMO.

I must admit that I do like the longet fuselage but yeah, the lack of winglets does take a bit from the looks compared to the B744. Still though, those raked wingtips and the new engines do spruce her up a bit and makes her look just a litttle bit more modern. I think the changes in appearance helps blend the oldest commercial aircraft still in production (i.e. B748) with the newest commercial aircraft in production (i.e. B787). In my opinion, the B747 has aged like a fine wine. I just hope a few more airlines order her because the B748 is almost certainly to be the end of the road for the B747 and probably the last ever quad produced by Boeing.

The A380 really isn't a looker. Not compared to the B747 nor will it achieve the same iconic status. However, you can't but be in awe of its sheer size. Best looking Airbus for me is the A340-600 hands down.

For me, the 744 is more proportionally perfect and pleasing to the eye. IMO the most beautiful plane flying today.
I've flown on pretty much everything out there and I'm still in awe of aviation and still get excited every time I get on a plane. But flying on a 747 for some reason always seems a little more special and a little more exciting.

BTW
I'll take the brute power of a 747 takeoff any day over the Gentle Giant's.

Just a personal observation, but the lack of the winglets on the -8 adds to its sleek appearance. Like some others, I believe the -8 is the best looking of the 747s There was a time when I didn't like the stretched upper deck, but I got used to it and now it looks natural and right.

I have too got used to the longer more slender 748, the bigger engines give it a more powerful look. I had the same dislike for the 787 nose in the start, but now I really like it and it makes all blunt nosed airframes look ugly. That Comet/Caravelle nose is very nice IMO. But the wings of the 787 complete the picture, very beautiful and impressive.

Things move slowly in aviation that is why the 787 is such a huge leap forward IMO, in many ways.

I got to fly the newest Queen from IAD to FRA and back a total of four times between early July and late August. The "dash 8" offers the most comfortable transatlantic flying experience I have ever had. The AC is quiet, cabin humidity is noticeably improved, and the new DLH economy seat is MUCH improved over previous generations. From what I read in Lufthansa Magazin, the 747-8 also has the fastest cruising speed of their fleet, edging out the A340-600 and A380. No surprise then that we passed a Air Canada 777 over the Atlantic!

I have had the experience of flying in every DLH AC except the A380. My previous transatlantic preference was the 777 in United E+. But of course Lufthansa service in Economy destroys anything that UAL offers.

Despite the fact that 747s have been the same length for 40 odd years until now (SP excluded), now that I see pictures of the 748 (I am yet to witness the splendour in the metal, sadly), suddenly the 744 and others look a bit stubby to me and the 748 looks like it has the right proportions!

That's what I thought... We need that kind of picture.

About the 744 vs 748 comparison, I saw both of them some days ago in FRA. And I was thinking that the 400 version has a more "massive" look than the -8 version... I don't know why but the 400 has a huge wing drop while on ground with a lot of fuel, when the -8 version seems to have a more "rigid" wing... The wing flex of the -8 version is by the why a little bit exagerated on drawings...
Thoughts?

Ugliness, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder.
It looks ungainly and quirky but some still prefer it over bald and stubby.
Btw, its a strategic airlifter developed from a heavy bomber, not a pax liner.
