Any Regional Elite Updates?

Wed Sep 19, 2012 3:10 am

Just wondering if there is any updates on who is taking over Regional Elite contracts in hubs like DTW and MSP? I know DGS got alot of contracts in line stations all over the country.

DGS got MSP. Transition date is November 13. DTW and MIA are still in the RFP process.

Thanks for the info. Any chances of mainline taking over handling for DTW or is that just still up in the air?

Its not up in the air. DL was not a bidder. There were 5 bidders initially. That was cut to 2 in the second round. Neither were mainline. I can't imagine any scenario where mainline costs to handle the flying would be lower than outsourcing. The talk of mainline taking it over has always been the pipedream of junior mainline (or DL ready reserves) hoping for a better schedule, or of regional employees hoping to get to mainline and mainline pay.

Internal memo on Friday notified us that DTW has also gone to DGS. MIA will go to Eulen America Aviation. Both transitioning November 4.

MLI will get DGS as well. Pay decrease and some other cruddy stuff for them. Don't remember all the details but it doesn't sound so great.

Who were the other bidders? I didn't think that there were even five companies who did DL ground handling...

Just because a company didn't ground handle DL previously didn't meant they wouldn't bid for the scope of the work in DTW. DGS, Swissport, Menzies, Skywest, and a 5th company bid originally (don't remember the 5th, sorry). The final 2 were Swissport and DGS.

DTW won't transition until December, 60 day WARN notice required.

For DTW ops, how are they planning to continue handling DCI ops over on Concourse A?

Compass flights are mainline above and below the wing still, correct?

What about the CR7 and CR9 ops over there?

The vast majority of RE stations are going to DGS. Exceptions are AEX, AZO, EYW, LSE, MQT, and TRI.

How does DL bid to themselves? Doesn't DL just evaluate their own costs and decide whether or not it makes sense to bring the work in house?

Is this the biggest city Delta outsources? There's a lot of mainline flights into MIA. Really surprised this didn't get insourced...

So if Regional Elite is headed out the door at DTW, why are they hiring? I applied a couple months ago for a part-time CSA position (really just to try it, always loved aviation although never worked around it). Last week I got an email inviting me to a 'Customer Service Agent' open house down in Romulus near the airport this Thursday.

Is it really worth my time at all if I'm going to get a part-time job only to be laid off in November or December. I still might do it, would be two months of something interesting and different...

You'll get offered a position with DGS at transition time.

I know that REAS had contracts for both DL and UA at FWA. At one time at FWA, DL was OH, NW was PinnPro (9E), and UA was OO - all three consolidated with REAS around the time of the DL/NW merger. (CO was with OH as well, but ended service at FWA around the time of the switch from SkyTeam to Star.) Eagle handles themselves at FWA and started handling G4 when LaBov & Beyond Business Aviation (owned by the same company that was FWA's ad agency from 2004-2006) exited the business.

Did DL transfer FWA to DGS, and if so, did UA follow as well? If not, who did DL (and UA) choose?

I'm pretty sure that REAS was below-wing only in Miami - pretty sure all the above wing is Mainline Delta.

Wouldn't be too shocking, since prior to the merger Delta only had mainline below-wing in select (large) cities and Northwest had a very small presence there (I believe PMNW was outsourced at Miami as they did not hit the weekly requirement for minimum number of mainline flights).

Tha'ts actually exactly how it works. DL will cherry pick what work they want to do. Case in point,MSP. See below. It's that simple.

A lot more simple than you may think. ATL went all mainline in 2007 and CVG in 2010 (or whatever year). If and when DL wants to take it all over in MSP or DTW, they will.

When DGS takes over in MSP, the DCI ramp tower which is now staffed by RE is going mainline. 36 new positions. The below wing group will also take over more DCI flights after the transition. Mostly Shuttle America for now. As it stands, they only handle CP. It's not always about "costs". There's a lot of things at play when deciding whether the work will be Delta or contract. Again, you need not look further than Atlanta or CVG.
What gets measured gets done.
