Ryanair To Serve Dortmund Initially With 6 Routes

Sat Oct 13, 2012 8:15 am

Ryanair will launch services from Dortmund to Alghero, Faro, Girona, Malaga, Porto and Palma in March 2013.

It will operate 14 weekly flights from Dortmund airport and expects to carry over 200,000 passengers per year.

Interesting news, with these routes obviously based upon outbound, summer-seasonal leisure passengers.

The inclusion of DTM as a served airport means FR serves 11 German facilities.

Ryanair's entrance at DTM follows the almost complete withdrawal of U2 from the airport. Once started as a 4-aircraft base in 2004, it has been shrunk ever since then. From the start of the winter season, all what's left is a LTN-DTM flight.

easyJet is to cease flights to BCN, PMI, BUD and SKG. PMI will be replaced by FR (and is also served by AB), BCN will be sort-of replaced by GRO.

Overall, DTM doesn't look the be a very successful airport. Most likely, it suffers from hefty competition from nearby DUS, NRN, FMO, CGN, PAD. AB, U2 and 4U all didn't manage to keep their operations viable. W6 so far is the only carrier that has shown growth over the years. Now, it will most likely become one of the many airports that see the majority of pax flying Europe's Ultra-LCCs FR and W6.

A major problem for DTM (for the U2 base) are opening hours. Also, compared to DUS and CGN, public transport connections aren't really good.

EZY's withdrawal has certainly reduced considerably.

Out of interest I thought I'd check DTM and EZY's seats (one-way) using OAG Schedules iNET. Here they are:

DTM's total one-way seats 2000-2012:

798928
1041490
806537
755908
689337
1093312
1258685
1359049
1460806
1033647
1068997
1051379
1105005

EZY's one-way seats 2004-2012:

221520
549588
655577
639413
480759
223013
227905
232927

I don't believe that is the reason. By location and catchment area, DTM would IMO be the natural LCC airport for the Ruhr area, ahead of NRN, FMO or PAD. The main problem of DTM are the opening hours, as you also say in your post, which prevent any LCC from setting up base there. Another 300-500m or so of runway length would also help a lot. Admittedly though, the airport is in a lousy location as far as noise impact is concerned.
