Any Convair CV 990 still flying ?

Tue Nov 17, 1998 9:17 am

Does anybody know if there are any Convair CV 990A
"Coronado" still flying, commercially or private ?

I think It's one of the sleekest looking planes ever developed. It was also the fastest Jetliner
in service prior to the Concorde.

To my knowledge, the last CV990 flight occurred towards the end of 1991 when
Ciskei International Airlines (Ciskei is a small country near South Africa) stopped operating. The plane was ferried from Africa to Ostend (Belgium) and
then across the Atlantic via Gander. to Dallas Love Field and finally to El Paso, where it still sits to this day, as far as I know. This particular 990 was originally delivered to American as N5612, and served for a year with Northeast as a "Yellowbird" and I believe was leased by APSA before going to Ports of Call Travel Club out of Denver. The Ciskei scheme was basically POC with Ciskei titles.

The second 990 ever built, which served with APSA, is on static display at the
Mohave air musem in California (Burbank is the closest commercial airfield) and
for 10 dollars they will drive you out to it and let you walk through it. It's got a full cabin with the APSA interior, which includes bulkhead murals of Andes mountain scenery. Very nice.

Yes, the 990 was special. To bad there weren't more of them.
CV990, the Maserati of the skies!

There's also an ex-Swissair CV990 in the transport museum in Lucerne,
Switzerland which you can walk through.

I never flew in one myself but the first jet I ever flew in was a
Cathay Pacific CV880 which was, I believe, the fastest airliner before
tha CV990. I hope I don't start a whole series of "... and before the
CV880 the fastest was the..." posts.
