WS Encore Headquarters To Be In YYC

Wed Oct 31, 2012 5:34 pm

WestJet just released the news of where the headquarters and maintenance facility will be based for their new regional airline WestJet Encore:

http://westjet2.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=713

I'm assuming it was a choice between YYC and WS facilities and headquarters here in YYC than the choice really makes the most sense. Why split it up and move it across the country?

The next question will be where they choose to start service when they receive the Q400's, will it be YYC or YYZ?[Edited 2012-10-31 10:51:39]

^Yes, I did. YYZ. I still maintain that their first batch will quickly go on YYZ-LGA. Too expensive to run that with a 736.
slow to 160, contact tower, slow to 160, contact tower, slow to....ZZZZZZZ......

I completely agree... It would be nice some other dash 8's besides US (piedmont)

I think there will be more than enough routes for not only the firm orders, but the options as well.
What the...?

Is there really not traffic on that route to sustain a 73G or 738.

I think the NYC - YTO market these days is just over flooded with capacity with so many players that are driving yields down the toilet. So it would be wise for WS to operate the new Dashes down to LGA.

Even AC, by far the dominant carrier on YYZ-LGA for years, has only been able to justify A319/320s on a few peak flights. Most AC flights are Embraer 175 or 190. AA has been all Eagle regional jet for a few years, and until fairly recently when I believe they standardized on the CRJ700, it was common to see 37-seat Embraer 135s on LGA-YYZ. For AA the route is of course mainly local O&D traffic while AC is feeding their major hub.

If not their first batch, but defintely some flights. Unless WS loads pick up in the next year on this route.

Yes and no. WS started service on this route in 2012 with 7x daily 736/G with an 8th added a month later. This is alot of capacity btu WS has nothing smaller than the 736 in their fleet. Loads are said to be poor (common with any new route). New York and Toronto are North America's 2 largest bank HQ cities with alot of business traffic which demands frequent service. WS could not service this market adequately with just 2x or 3x daily. WS also had to make use of the slots they were awarded or risk losing them. I think the WS Q400 will eventually make its way on to this route.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
