Four KL MD11's are already withdrawn from service, three are at the desert for scrapping, the faith of the fourth one has not been decided ( fleet reserve ?)

Based on the latest adjustment, YUL is the sole MD11 route left for the winter 2013/14 season.

Quick check of flightaware shows AMS-YUL,SFO and HAV are MD-11's.

Chances are good still! I was told till mid 2014 you can get to see them in KLM livery! I booked AAL-SFO this december for only 500GBP. both AMS-SFO and back direct too, is going to be on MD11. I thought their range couldn't get to SFO from AMS. But hey we learn everyday. I was quite sad to see the number of MD11's go from 11 to 7 in their inflight mag

wow ? that badly ? Im the other way man, plus im tired of 10 abreast! But I guess ur getting the 772 rather than the 300 ? Best flights ive had with klm, was on MD11! in turbulence even, its quite steady!

Pity to hear that the MD-11s are on their final journey as passenger aircraft. I never got the please of flying on one (not the DC10 for that matter) and I am unlikely to get the chance at this stage. Another step towards seeing nothing but varying sizes of twins at our airports.

Easy. The MD-11 really has the legs for long-range flights, it's capability-wise between the 772ER and 343 variants. During next summer, the M11 will be deployed 3-weekly on AMS-LAX.

I think your chances are better for the 332. Currently, they fly the M11 5x weekly during winter. Initially, for this winter, they scheduled 6x weekly 332 (and M11 to AUA). When finalizing the schedule, they swapped these route designations.
I wouldn't be surprised to see AMS-SFO on 332 next winter. Summer can be 744 or 77W.

This is not correct, KLM will not operate MD11 to LAX in Summer 2013.
The only official MD11 destinations in Summer 2013 are:
- YUL daily,
- YYZ 3x/week
- IKA 4x/week
There will be spare MD11 aircraft in the fleet, so they may substitute other LH aircraft at times.

What's your source? The KLM timetable still lists the MD11 for KL 603/604 for the period 06-19 Jun 2013 and 01-29 Sep 2013 on days 467.
In July and Augustus 2013, a 74M is scheduled for KL 603/604 for days 2467.
During the whole summer (Mar-Oct), there is daily KL 601/602, mixing 74M and 744.

Time remaining until the next Heavy Maintenance Visit (HMV) will probably be the decisive factor

Those KLM MD-11s are just around 18 years old. Pretty young food for the scrapman.
While I agree that the KLM livery is one of the best on the 777 I´m sure you´ll be tired of them more quickly for sure. Once gone, it´ll be the 777 for the next 15 years for you, nothing to look forward to with much anticipation. The 777 is the opposite of a rare bird.
KLMs 777s have 10 abreast in Eco? Like AF then. Did they have it from the start or is that a recent downgrade? God, thats a no-go for sure.

Do you think the retirement has anything to do with the upcoming AD's? I was told it would cost between 11 and 12.5 million per aircraft to correct. I can see any small operator of the aircraft disposing of them, as the cost isn't worth the effort.

Joost, I stand corrected. The MD11 will operate AMS-LAX-AMS in the two shoulder periods and according to the GDS even 10 days longer than you mention:
- from 06 to 29 June 2013 = 3x/week MD11
- from 01 to 29 September 2013 = 3x/week MD11
