Hi all,
watching the Emirates 777-300 depart from Newcastle today I was wondering which is the smallest airport the airline is currently flying to. I know that there is a number of different factors that can be used for the comparison but perhaps we can use the runway length and the number of passengers per year for the comparison?

Theres a high chance that airport might be one of the 12-14 destinations that EK serves in India.
India's biggest loss w.r.t global aviation (so far) - Being an Australasia-Europe stopover.

By number of pax Dar es Salaam, Entebbe Lusaka, Harare, Erbil, Basra must be close to the botton.
Runway wise DAR, EBB, HRE, LUn are good runways, also Basra and Erbil are pretty long.

EK serves 10 destinations in India and none get less than 10 flights a week. Not in India.

True, Larnaca handled 5.500.000 passengers in 2011 and ranked higher than Newcastle (4.300.000) and Malta (3.500.000).

I suppose it is a tie between Mahe and Erbil. The most recent info I can find from Erbil is 555,714 passengers per year (1 Sept 2010 - 31 Aug 2011 ) , Mahe claims 618,675 over 2010 . Wikipedia states 621,870 for Erbil though but I'm unable to verify that.

The answer in my opinion would have to be MLE or SEZ. I've flown EK into MLE more than a few times dating back to when Hulumale wasn't built and before the current terminal was in place.

Doesn't one of the MLE continue to CMB and stop in MLE on the way back? I think it is EK652/EK653 so while it may appear by the aircraft capacity that MLE has more seats, are more O&D passengers boarding or alighting there?

Agreed. While EK has 5th freedom between CMB and MLE, I do not see a big % of traffic utilising it. Perhaps then MLE and SEZ might have similar loads......

If you look at it from a purely international service, DUR is pretty small. Aren't Emirates the only daily international service?

Therefore, I've just conducted a short research to get some facts into this thread.
There are several airports served by EK with an approximate 0.6 million pax per year:
Baghdad --- Erbil --- Harare --- Lusaka --- Mahé (Seychelles)
I couldn't find any numbers for Basra. But I guess it's supposed to be smaller than Baghdad and Erbil, so this might be the airport we are looking for (at least if pax number = airport size)
Also, I have no data about Khartoum and Sanaa, but I guess these airports have more than 0.6 pax per year.

Sudan is booming and IY alone likely carries 0.6M+ pax a year out of SAH so I think the list you have is good. Is Lusaka really that low? I recall it being at 550k pax almost 7 years ago!
If you're looking at airport footprint in terms of KM^2 its for sure MLE.

Maybe Abidjan (ABJ) in Ivory Coast? EK has a daily A345 or B77W via ACC. ABJ airport is around 1,3 million pax per year.

As stated above, my research has been very quick and elementary. According to the German Wikipedia, Lusaka Airport hat a bit more than 600,000 passengers in 2006. By now, this number may well have changed.

And after the cease in operation of Zambezi this could have been less, I think now they are planning to start again or they start, but even Harare is close to that figures or now even less after Air Zimbabwe collapse.... however maybe the longest runways in EK network 4750m.
Smallest runway so far my bet is NCL, only 2.305m, difficult to beat that one....

Yes I agree, NCL probably has the shortest runway of any Emirates destination at 7,641ft / 2,329m although I would be intrigued to know if any other Emirates destination has a shorter runway than that!
