BAe Sells UK Filton Airport For Housing.

Fri Dec 21, 2012 4:10 pm

Sad news.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-20811086

"Filton has been in operation for more than 100 years and saw the first UK test flight of the Concorde prototype in 1969.
In 2003, the final Concorde to fly travelled from Heathrow to Filton. The jet is still parked alongside the runway.
The airfield also saw the maiden flight of the Bristol Brabazon airliner in 1949."

A reminder that all thing come to an end.

A mate of mine at Airbus Filton mentioned this to me a while ago - obviously the joint lease situation wasn't financially viable, especially for Airbus which don't have all that many movements going on.

Sad.

And Penzance Heliport closed in October.

Penzance Heliport

Does this mean just a boat service to the Scilly Isles after that?

From Penzance, yes, with Skybus flying from nearby Land's End (up to 20-daily on summer days but none on Sundays) and also Newquay (7-daily on summer Saturdays, often 6-daily on summer weekdays, but none on Sundays) and Exeter (4-to-5-daily during the summer, but none on Sundays). Bristol and Southampton have ceased.

It is a real shame that back when the M4/M5 were laid out, and before Filton got surrounded by housing, no one in authority realised what a great strategic location for an airport Filton would be. Close to the rail mainline and North/South and East/West motorways, it could have served a wide area.

A "epic fail" in transport planning in my opinion.

iirc, they will be railed to Bristol Docks and then shipped to Toulouse.

G-MKKA was still there on 7th September, but for how much longer.

Very sad, what will happen to Concorde? Maybe MAN can buy her and have another Concorde at the AVP/RVP? They could move it by road like they did with the Trident.

Another idea could be make the Concorde and remaining planes into a museum with the houses.

Agree. Especially given that BRS is awkward to get to (from the North it means driving through the city. From the South West it means 18 miles of twisty single carriageway from the M5 at Highbridge)

Plus BRS is pretty tight, fog and turbulence prone.

So what's happening to Concorde Alpha Foxtrot. Will she be moved somewhere else? I had the pleasure of flying her twice.

BAE have "donated" some land (hopefully around some of the significant old hangars) to allow a museum to be built. As per with Bristol everyone's scratching their heads wandering who will pay for it.

If we don't have another wet summer. Lands End currently has issues with their runway being severely waterlogged, leading to it being closed for almost a week as it literally couldn't support the handful of daily flights during winter without them sinking in. A repeat of last summer on already very wet ground and 40 daily movements would turn it into a mudbath Glastonbury could be proud of. We need at least 3 months of mostly dry weather, or things could get interesting - currently 20mm of rain overnight is enough to cause serious flash floods.

Spot on, it was a near perfect location 40 or 50 years ago with the extra runway length BRS now badly needs to attract long haul flights. A missed opportunity.
