New JAL Uniform

Fri Dec 21, 2012 7:26 pm

Looks like JAL just unveiled new uniforms for its crews. We'll see it on planes starting in April 2013.

Love it ! A big step up from the current boring uniform. This reminds me a lot of the nice cabin crew uniform they had in the 80s with the red stripes.

They seem conventional but nice except for the guy with red clown pants. Those are neither.

LOVE the embroidered tsurumaru on the sleeve... but don't know how I feel about the belted dress-might be a little too retro and does very much resemble the 80s uniform. Don't really like all the red trim or edging around the pocket flaps and collar.

Oh gosh . . . nothing cutting-edge or original here. Is this a '70s revival or what?

That's exactly what I thought about this new uniform...

Plus, is it me or JAL likes introducing new uniforms every 3 or 4 years ?!

LOL that's funny.

I don't think they are anything that forward thinking. Anything that resembles the same Chinese/Japanese tradition for these styles deserves a try - and these look typically plain.

I can't specifically remember the current uniforms (I guess they are not that memorable), but these don't look like much of anything either. The thing about JAL is that they still have the mentality of being the official flag carrier of Japan, even though they aren't anymore, so they are probably *very* conservative about things like the appearance of their crews.

Do the current uniforms not have hats? I think ANA's do. This is a trend I find kind of lamentable... I always found it kind of charming how everyone in Japan still wore hats, especially with any kind of official uniform, but it seems like they're following the west now and slowly getting rid of them.

I tend to agree with the emerging consensus here. The red accents on the uniform are nice for splashes of color. I love red belts on anyone! I note some similarities (perhaps just the color palette, even) between JAL and fellow OW partner airberlin. Overall, I find it to be fairly average.

I'll never understand why fashion designers tend to dress themselves like idiots. If you see someone that looks like a homeless guy that robbed a circus, chances are they are either a fashion designer or a homeless guy that robbed a circus.

The problem is that a fair number of those cute Japanese girls are not girls.

Their brand seems to be very inconsistent: they have a very minimalistic aircraft livery, a very busy but traditional uniform and a bold cabin design. Stick to one!

I personally would like they built their brand like the red cabins, they seems very distinctive, warm and inviting. I don't see how the blue in the uniforms fits into the picture and quite frankly, apart from the white jacket they are pretty ugly. The normal uniform looks quite cheap with the red thrown around everywhere and having a logo on the shoulder just screams cheap/made in the 80's. And some settlers from the Mayflower want their dresses back...

It would have been nice if they had a red suit dress for the ladies. It would be a nice change from the typical navy.

Meh. With such an abundance of blue uniforms, I'm just glad to see the iconic crane logo back. Still one of the most attractive airline logos ever. JAL has never been known for pushing the envelope with uniforms, so expectations shouldn't really be that high.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

I think the tsurumaru would have looked nicer down the sleeve near the cuff, or on the front pocket. The red around the collar stands out too much, but the rest of it looks fine to me. Reminds me of the old NW uniforms. The white jacket is a nice touch for a purser type position. The grey jumpsuits for Ramp/MX personnel would look nicer if not for so much red or black. Maybe simple trimming on pockets and sleeves. Sort of reminds me of the grey HP jumpsuits when they first came out. We all screamed, that we looked like we escaped from prison. BTW, I did find the F/C cabin to be a bit severe in design. Too esoteric, and not all that warm. Business class looked great. Overall tho, I give it a fairly good grade. There are some uniforms out there, that look awful, and some that are fantastic.

Boring! While they are clean, simple and alright, they look like they moved back into the early 90s era. Do like the JAL logo on the outside of the arm for inflight.

The uniforms are nice, although nothing special, but I do like the Y class interior design (if that is new- I really have no clue what JAL's Y class currently looks like). Not often that you see the seat cushion be a different color from the seat back, and the red and black go well together.

Agree with you 100%. The cabin crew uniform with the scarfs that have the stripes does not bode well with the jacket and seems to be a throw back to the 90s...one may even say 80s.

I think they look very boring and 80s. Not inspiring or modern at all. But perhaps they are very japanese. The woman's dress lacks elegance and whilst it is fine for serving in economy, I don't think it is a uniform appropriate to JALs high end first class. When the FAs wear the jacket it looks nice. The white jacket looks very classy serving in First I like that alot!! I recall QF were going to introduce one to replace their current black serving jackets, but the crew complained too much. Shame it would have looked great!

In saying all of this. Points won for uniformity. It will be interesting to compare how the new QF, AA, UA and AN uniforms compare!

That's their problem in a nutshell. They are all over the place with their image and have been for the last 15 years.

I like the look of the uniform but didn't really think they needed to change their current uniform.
