Hopefully this new owner will continue the fleet upgrade as well as new routes ...

To have ATR72s take the larger airports and the ATR42s take the smaller ones ...

Either A. Someone that needs a Certificate to fly DHC-8's fast anywhere in the country.
B. Hawaiian or other current Hawaii player that wants to eliminate a competitior.
C. Somebody that needs a big tax write-off

Even though Hawaiian has 85% of the inter-island market, having Island and go! keeps fares competitive.

Between Island and go!, the former has a better performance record and service.

Island Air has been quite the challenging operation lately. Lots of cancelled flights & dissatisfied islanders has helped propel Mokulele Airlines up quite a bit (now doing 15/day KOA-OGG flights). They were down to 1 plane for a while.

And their load factor of barely 40% doesn't bode well for the ATRs, which will be more than DOUBLING their capacity.... add that Silver is getting Sabre and dumping the WP code probably means that even Silver is nervous about WP's ability to continue operating.

I wonder if go!/ YV / Mesa would be interested in buying them. Those CRJs are getting nothing productive done.

What about Skywest? Eliminate a competitor, have a place to put some of the Brasilias and they have a relationship with Alaska, Delta, United, Us and AA.....

In what way are SkyWest and Island air competitors? The mainland Brasilia flying is actually quite profitable (in relation to CRJ-2/700 flying according to mgmt). If it wasn't they wouldn't keep renewing the leases.

Again, it is not another airline. See the link I posted earlier. It now has the video of the news segment with the interview with Island Air President Les Murashige.

Much more info in the interview then the article. Thanks.

So what business, has knowlede of the airline business but is not in the airline business? hmm?

With the new info my guess is Roberts Hawaii or JTB. Both are large travel agencies in Hawaii. JTB caters to the Japanese market, Roberts is a tour bus company that offers a lot of overnight packages to the outer-islands.

JTB is a Japanese company, so it couldn't be them due to US airline foreign ownership restrictions.

The family who owns Roberts Hawaii was once owners of Mahalo Airlines, who in fact operated ATR42s.

Could UA pick it up as a UAX carrier? Or DL?

Good guess, that sounds more likely, since we know it's not another carrier. What about Regal Travel and Trans Hawaiian? I know Regal is the largest locally owned travel company in Hawaii (or was when I worked for them) Trans Hawaiian was their white & blue tour bus company and number one competition to Roberts.

On a personal note I've been flying twotters with them since Aloha Island Air days, and I think well of this little carrier, I hope whomever takes over ensures this much needed competitor to the 800 lb gorilla at HNL stays around for years to come.

Lol...Allegiant can't even keep a consistently on-time schedule to/from the mainland, let alone trying to figure out how things work around here.

Well now that's an interesting development... wonder if he has plans for Lanai tourism or the airline.

Island Air's service has been SSSOOO aweful that it has affected people getting to/from the resorts and island itself. Mokulele also flies to Lanai, but you get a lot of attitudes that avoid the Cessna Caravans. I recall we (Mokulele) were talking to the resorts a while back to add EMB 170 flights in there, and we even did a handful of charters in there.

But as someone that has survived a total of 4 owners of Mokulele, things *can* get better at Island Air, err they have to.

He owns 98% of Lāna‘i ... he could have more MKU flights than HAL.

HAL is only starting off with 2 ATR42s.

MKU is supposed to get 1-2 more ATR72s, and 2-3 ATR42s. They could operate more flights into Lāna‘i from around the islands.
