AA's 77W Is On The Move

Sun Jan 13, 2013 12:38 pm

It will be flying a company charter today under flight numbers 9708 and 9709. It will be carrying members of aircraft maintenance and inflight products division. Leaves DFW at 0800 arrives MIA at 1337. Departes MIA at 1400 arrives back in DFW at 1604. Still all grey.

I'm really impressed that the thing is going to actually be flying revenue routes on the 31st. I was reading over on travel polls about how to get a Brazilian visa so I can go with the bird to Brazil!

Pretty easy process overall, but it can take about 10 days from start to finish. Last I checked it was $150usd for a Visa, first entry within 90 days. Not sure now but in the past it was either good for 90 days or good for 5 years. Not sure how it is now.

Your lucky man if you get to fly on her! I wish I had the time and $$$$. If you do be sure to post a report and lots of pictures.

Did they use the 77W so they could get a little bit of crew training/experience on the real bird before the GRU flight?

Crew training is merely 4 pages of differences training from the 772 to the 77W. IMHO its just a demo flight. Its only in MIA for 30 mins, not enough time to do much of anything except gas n go.

Hopefully some MIA spotters will catch some pics.

I think you're right. Several things happen:

-Pilot training, so that they get familiar with the airplane although familiarization will be easy for them if they are type rated on the 772 already.

-MX crews in MIA, so they get introduced to the new bird, although most parts are common with the 772.

-DFW and MIA based flight attendants, they get familiar with the cabin and galley layouts.

-Gate space allocation available in MIA, so that airport planners have a better idea of what clearance is required.

And last but not least:

-Spotters in MIA will see it and shoot it with their cameras.

Not going to a gate in MIA, parking at hangar for gas n go only.

From what I have heard this is true, aircraft will EIS with a generic hybrid scheem (basically AA's current over the grey n white). The new livery is postponed indenfianately.

AA and UCC have asked for another extention till mid April. So I doubt we will see anything till then at the earliest.

Really? That's going to look horrible and it's a public relations gaffe.

I guess the new AA is going to look completely dysfunctional. Not a good way to kick off at all.

Just departed around 10:45. From what I've heard, the main purpose of the flight is IFE testing (which would explain the weird routing over Mexico, if they're trying to test the global satellte wi-fi).

Snapped a picture of her blasting off the 35s:

Anyone else feel like they're pulling this out way too long and wasting precious revenue time?

At this time the EIS date is set and will not likely change, unless something unforseen comes up. However, at this point it will EIS as you see it.

I need to keep an eye on it. I hope it uses 8R as its takeoff runway then I could be flying right over my house if it does not make the turn to the west early.

I'm not any more informed than you are, but I very much doubt this statement. For the airline to debut its brand-new flagship aircraft on one of its most prestigious international routes with nothing more than a blank placeholder nightmare would be a PR fiasco. I have a feeling that AA's got something up their sleeves for this aircraft, and there are still more than 2 weeks to go before EIS.

Joking aside, I actually like that livery. I hope it means that AA is seriously considering a livery change away from their metallic grey they have going on.

I have to agree. Remember, AA is in Bankruptcy. They have just weathered a horrible PR nightmare with labor action. They are going back on forth on a merger. Their public image is very compromised as it is.

To debut the flagship in some hybrid livery makes no sense for two reasons:
1) The aircraft would have to be pulled out of service and the livery painted once the new brand is revealed, meaning loss of revenue.
2) It would make the airline look disjointed and dysfunctional. Image means a lot in this sort of business, don't forget.

Frankly, to debut in some transitional livery would be indicative of a management that is wishy-washy and can't make firm decisions. That is the job of management, after all...to make decisions.

Funny thing is that they can't even adopt TACA's solution to the problem, which would be painting the aircraft in the alliance livery. Oneworld doesn't have a full livery.

AA always used to sell-out First and Business at GRU at full price. People would be standing by for no-shows, prepared to pay the difference. I assume they are at least still doing well if not selling out. Prestige markets feature a lot of promotional and top tier upgrades.

I didn't stop to get an exact count, but today, AA will send somewhere around seven or eight planes to GRU. Just like every other day. The livery on those planes won't make a hill of beans.

While it'd be nice to see what the final, new livery will be, even if AA simply slaps 'American' on the sides with decals on the current grey/white paint job, that it flew without the final design will barely be a blip in the news in traditional media outlets outside of a couple of aviation blogs in newspapers in Seattle and Dallas. There will be no anarchy within the ranks, EXPs won't defect to UA or DL, and AMR's bankruptcy case won't come to a halt in the court system.

These are expensive planes to have sitting around not earning income while the company is in Chapter 11. They will fly, with the new livery ready and painted or not. Life will go on!

Agreed. I find it hard to believe that AA wouldn't capitalize on the opportunity to launch their new branding. They've got their brand-new 77W, first in the USA, brand new products in all three cabins, and a (partial) new livery.

There's still around two weeks before EIS. I'm hoping that AA has a trick up their sleeve that will see a new livery introduced on DFW-GRU come 31JAN.

Who says that AA has to wait to exit bankruptcy to unveil a new livery? Remember that UA's last tulip livery came out in either late '03 or early '04, more than a year after filing for Chapter 11, and it didn't exit Chapter 11 until early '06.

I there is still plenty of time to move both 77Ws to a paint facility and have the rest of the new livery applied, then fly them back to DFW at night and hide them in a hanger until shortly before they enter service.

Somewhere deep within AA's headquarters, the few people who actually know what the livery will look like, and when it will debut, are laughing at all the rumours and supposition they're seeing on this thread, and the other AA livery thread, and saying "Nobody on Anet has any ****ing clue what is going to happen!"
