Will MEA Ever Serve Bangkok?

Thu Jan 31, 2013 5:49 am

Surprised they never have in the past, just about every MIddle Eastern carrier serves the place, even from Iran with Mahan also doing Phuket, dont Lebanese holiday in the east? if they do are the numbers not large enough to warrant their own service?

On paper BEY-BKK is not a very large market at all based on daily passenger flows.

There are larger intercontinental markets such as Montreal, Sydney, New York, Sao Paulo, Melbourne, Detroit, Tokyo and Shanghai from Beirut.

plus EK, QR, and EY provide excellent connections through their respective hubs from Beirut.

The market is O & D and probably has very low yields.

Quoting MEA (Reply 2):

Yes - PDEW 46/day, about the same as places like Stockholm, Berlin.

That's a thin long leisure route. No way MEA will ever run that kind of business again.
The market is saturated with connections via IST, AUH, DOH, DXB, etc.

The next long haul market where MEA will make money is over the Atlantic, in due time.

My family own a group of shopping centres in Lebanon called Eldorado and the vast majority of their stock comes through Bangkok (or Thailand). The best way of getting there is with EK, which they do. My cousin flies Beirut- Dubai- Bangkok every fortnight with Emirates.

I think it's definitely because of airlines in the gulf that we won't see MEA operating to the East- they just cannot compete.
MEA did serve Singapore, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Colombo, Karachi, Mumbai in the past (maybe a few more destinations than that but cannot recall) at a time when airlines such as Emirates and Qatar were very much in their infancy. The civil war stunted the expansion of the airline and Beirut is not at the top of people's lists when transferring.

I met Mohammed Hout in 2006 and he said that the airline could not compete with the gulf carriers. EK can drop their prices and undercut the competition because of the volume of passengers they have.
Iran and the other gulf countries have a very large work force made up of Asians - Indians and Thai etc which mean that they have the passengers to justify air links, but probably quite low yielding.

MEA is a relatively tiny country. During the summer it is often difficult to find flights there, and often quite expensive.
Lots of Lebanese travel back to visit the country.

Any expansion for MEA will be within the range of their new A321/A320s- possibly some more African destinations.
Maybe Brazil and ofcourse America if it was allowed but I wouldn't hold your breath.
I think they could probably fill a weekly flight to some of the key Asian cities but they are quite cautious.
