Carnival Triumph Charter Flights

Wed Feb 13, 2013 4:58 pm

I read today that Carnival has chartered 20 plus flights to get the 3,200 passengers to IAH and HOU from MOB. Does anyone know what airlines are flying and the types? 767 and 747's? So does anyone know anything about the flights?

Doing the math of 3200/20 = 160 Id say 737s. Given the shorter duration of the flight I would say probably 4x going back and forth.

They are being bused to New Orleans to hotels and then flown to Houston.

So they can bus right away home or repo to MSY and then fly home. Either way, an ugly logistical situation.

Quote:
"The ship, whose propulsion system was knocked out by the Sunday morning fire, is expected to arrive in Mobile late Thursday afternoon, where passengers can either spend the night in a hotel in Mobile or New Orleans or be bused back to Texas immediately.

More than 1,500 hotels rooms in Mobile and New Orleans have been booked and 10 charter flights have been secured to fly passengers to Houston on Friday. For passengers with cars at the port of Galveston, buses have been arranged to bring them back.

Carnival is in the process of securing buses for a Thursday evening transfer from Mobile to Houston or Galveston for passengers who would rather get home sooner, Cahill said. "

I'd opt for the overnight stay in New Orleans just to clean up. Can you imagine how nasty those poor people feel? No showers for 4 days, the smell from all the sewerage in the halls? I'm willing to bet the folks in Mobile will smell the ship coming 2 miles away.
And Houston is at least a 10 hour bus ride from Mobile.

What I like as part of the compensation package the passengers on Triumph will get a 25% discount on another Carnival cruise.
Now how many people do you think are willing to do this again?

I keep thinking about that Costa ship that ran a ground in Italy, that is only being salvaged now, Costa is a Carnival company. So 2 bad situations in as many years, not a good track record, considering other lines are not having these issues at all.

I just booked us on a cruise a week or two ago, and even then, before this stranding, Carnival was not even taken into consideration as a potential candidate for our business. I pray for those passengers. all the food that was on board, is likely spoiled or running out, but I'd think they would air drop food or other things if necessary.

Royal Caribbean owns the majority of other cruise lines - together they control about 85% of all cruise business.

This 25% is actually for people who were booked on the numerous cruises that have been cancelled in the upcoming weeks on this boat. For the passengers on this stranded cruise, they are receiving full refund on cost(s) of cruise, including onboard purchases (except for those made in gift shops and casino), plus an additional credit of whatever they spent on this cruise to be used on future cruise, an additional $500.00 compensation, plus all transportation costs associated with the return.

Miami Air was originally contracted to fly several MID-IAH turns when the ship was headed to Mexico. I haven't seen the schedules for tomorrow yet, but based on the calls I keep getting from crew scheduling, I'd dare to presume that we're doing some of the flights from MSY, now.

I've heard that too. Buses from Mobile to either MSY or Houston and flights from either MWY, HOU or both. I think this has more to do with the home-port of the vessel.

MOB longest runway is 8,502' the largest scheduled airframe I see is a DL MD-88. There is also quite a bit of military traffic at MOB. The Coast Guard operates a Aviation Training Center at the airport.

It's going in to dock for several weeks... I don't think it will be any worse than any other "super cleanup" they do when ships go in for maintenance. EVERYTHING gets scrubbed, all the linens changed, probably all the bed materials (mattresses, boxes, pillows) replaced, carpets all get steam cleaned or replaced...

Once the ship airs out for a few hours (on dockside power) with no passengers on board I doubt it'll be that bad. Most of the complaints are about public areas that are crammed full of unwashed people. The departing crew will have to clean up all the "temporary toilets" before it can be released to dock crews anyways. I wonder if the refit will happen in the US or if they will tow it to Italy?

Depending how much damage the fire did they may need to do some major surgery on the ship to swap out components.

Many years ago I was on a cruise aboard the Holland America’s Nordam, not the same Nordam that is in service today, but the previous Nordam.

We met on of the officers in the Crow’s Nest lounge, one of the couples husbands we were with on the sailing was Dutch, so they had a conversation in Dutch and that is when we found out the ship was having generator problems and was cruising on 1 engine some of the times as the workers they had brought on board worked on the generator.

He said that if the workers could not fix the generator, then it would have to be replaced and that would require cutting a hole in the side of the ship to remove and replace the generator and that would have required the ship be taken out of service.

I personally think they were trying to do some temporary repairs on the generator until the ship was scheduled for its normal yearly dry docking when they would have the time to replace the generator

Mobile mayor is pissed...says they had enough hotel rooms and accessibility at their airport to handle this.

I thought that was strange too, the bussing to New Orleans before they get a chance to fly back to Houston.

Isn't it more like a 10 hour bus ride to Houston from Mobile? The way it's planned as miserable as it may be the bus ride may be the quickest way to get back to Houston. The people who chose to fly will overnight in a hotel in New Orleans first while the people on the bus will have already be back in Houston.

Mobile has more than enough capability to handle any aircraft that may want to use and the runways are long enough. But is the terminal building capable of handline 3500+ passengers all at once?

Can't wait once the ship arrives to all the tales of woe from the passengers!

Yeah, Carnival has to be concerned about the Norwalk virus (stomach flu) which seems to plague ocean liners http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001298/ "is common among school-age children. It may also cause outbreaks in hospitals and on cruise ships".

I want to say I heard her next twelve voyages have been cancelled until sometime in Apirl/May.

I'm not surprised this wasn't fully vetted by Carnival. Doesn't seem like their emergency/contingency response is a well refined or executed plan. Certainly, you have to call audibles from time to time, I get it, but this just has the appearances of being a massive shitshow.

And after the protracted delay, people aren't going to want to fart around and take a damn bus trekking I-10 back to Galveston.

I know two or three people who are on this ill fated cruise, can't wait to hear their stories this weekend. Gotta be horrid.

So flights to IAH or HOU and then when they get to IAH or HOU, another bus back down to the GLS cruise terminal!! I'd say just run some flights from MOB or MSY direct to GLS for the short bus ride over to the cruise terminal. Sure it may take a few more airplanes since the runways at GLS may not be stressed for a B738/9, but at least that beats another almost hour long bus ride from HOU or longer from IAH.

Since the ship is now within 2 miles of the port of Mobile the passengers who have cell phones can now talk to their families on land. And the news isn't that bad. They brought on more generators so they have more lights. Most claim that while the event made them uncomfortable the crews on the ship were as helpful as possible. They never felt in danger at any time. Customs came on board yesterday and everyone cleared customs on the ship. But when it docs at around 10Pm tonight they won't be able to get off the ship til 2-3am because of "technical issues".

It appears that Carnival has kept all passengers aware of what is going on at all times.

So is most of this just media hype?

I'm figuring they chose New Orleans so the cruisers would have a popular vacation destination in which to clean up, get drunk, laissez les bon temps roulez, and at least feel "vacationed" before heading home, all courtesy of Carnival. Some folks will doubtless just want to get on the bus, smelly as they are, get their cars in Galveston, and head home, although they would probably do well to stop somewhere for the night, clean up, and get some rest before driving. Maybe Carnival didn't want the bad publicity that will come when an exhausted, feces-covered family of four rolls off the Interstate in a flaming wreck because they "just wanted to get home". A night in New Orleans actually will make things safer for the folks I think.

So far I've identified about 23 people who are the source of most of the media reported complaints. Most appear to have had inside cabins on the lowest decks. They complained about the long lines for the working restrooms - and many folks still tried to use their room toilets - despite being told not to.

These complainers have racked up a ton of roaming charges for the cell phone links.

The media also isn't reporting the two other Carnival ships diverted to support this ship with hot food several times a day.

There is no doubt that conditions were unpleasant. And people are unhappy.

As of last report from CNN quite the number of passengers are opting out of the Carival transportation and are just heading to hotels in Mobile and will find their own way home.

According to ABC news in order to get the bus and flight or just even the bus the passengers have to sign a waiver not to sue Carnival over this. This was a requirement for ground transport.

Looks like Delta will be the airline doing the flying from MSY this morning.

If true, amazing that they are demanding releases just to get people back to the point of embarkation.

I'm thinking that even the most hideous contract of adhesion requires Carnival to return them to that point, although I of course haivng seen it.

Yeah, sure, where do I sign? My lawyer will probably be able to void the release on the ground of duress, i.e. "After they tortured us for 5 days, all we wanted to do was GO HOME!"

And this is news how?

Just like airlines, cruise lines put everything they can into the fine print to avoid responsibility and being sued.

Still doesn't stop people from suing on occasion, and lawyers for funding class action suits.

Sometimes they win.

The legal key is usually proving gross negligence. i.e. that the airline/ cruise line did something which created an unsafe condition purposely, not simply an unavoidable accident.

Here is the link to Carnival's ticket contract. You don't have to book a cruise to see the document, and the limitations - especially sections 11, 12 & 13. The bit about buying a ticket is pure hype by CNN.

Do I agree with how this part is being handled, no. Though Carnival as a company is just trying to CYA - cover their ass! Could this be fought and won in a court of law, 50 / 50 chance that is for sure. If anything it would be a delay tactic just fighting what you signed.

Delta charter flights to IAH

Those are some out of the way routing.....most MSY and airports along the Gulf Coast either file for or are assigned the southeast arrival (WOLDE) to IAH, every day unless weather.

Wonder why DL filed for the TXMEX Arrival over AEX unless Carnival wanted to keep the pax from seeing water?

Maybe they think they'll get a better chance of being assigned 26L, but 27 works just as well for the A330 as I don't see it parking at Terminal A.....gotta be going to D.

DL8864 is on it's way back to MSY.

According to FlightAware, Delta has 6 ships helping out on this:

2 x 767-300ERs
N1613B
N177DZ

1 x 767-400
N837MH

1 x A330-300
N812NW

2 x A330-200
N858NW
N860NW

That's pretty impressive, to be able to mobilize your fleet like that on such short notice. Kudos to DL!
