Garuda Indonesia LGW-BKK-DPS Route

Sun Feb 17, 2013 1:17 pm

I am aware that this may have been discussed before but can't find anything in the forum.

Garuda Indonesia used to, many years ago, serve LGW from DPS via BKK. I am wondering when did they first start this service via BKK to DPS from LGW? And when did this route cease operations?

Also i'm looking for departure and arrival times at LGW for this flight if it operated in all of these years; between 1998-2004.

Wondered if anyone had any Garuda Indonesia timetables from these periods that would show flight times to/from Gatwick?

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Joseph

According to the March 2000 OAG timetable I have:

DPS-BKK-LGW

0015//0305 0435//1015 on days 1 and 6 with a 744 (GA 970)

LGW-BKK-DPS

2000//1425 1540//2035 on days 1 and 6 with a 744 (GA 971)

This route was definitely operating in Summer 2001 as I took it.

I believe in 2001 or 2002 it was replaced with a 6 weekly CGK-SIN-FRA-LGW route, which didn't last long due to the Bali bomb when European routes were axed altogether.

I'm not sure when it first started - I would guess during the 98/99 period. I believe - though I'm not sure - that before the Asian financial crisis most of the European routes passed through Jakarta.

According to this article it looks like the European flights started to be suspended in early 2003 following the bombings of late 2002.

Garuda Indonesia Suspends All €uropean Flights (by Singapore_Air Nov 21 2002 in Civil Aviation)

In the articles is seems to suggest that Frankfurt and London were served separately, which makes me think that the combined Frankfurt // London route must have been introduced in late 2001, before reverting to going via BKK in 2002 prior to the bombings.

It looks like Frankfurt was ditched almost immediately with LGW soldiering on into 2003 before being canned. I think Amsterdam lasted until 2004 but I might be wrong.

I would suggest asking Mandala499 or HW-IBC as they should have a better idea than I.

I thought I'd read that GA was banned from European airspace for a period, due to not meeting the operation safety oversight (or something along those lines) required by the latter - i.e. a la PR, and formerly KE + CI? I know the Bali bombings in 2002 didn't help either - afterwards DPS was labelled a security risk by US Homeland Security. Can still remember postings on the walls of the CVG security checkpoint area calling it and a couple other airports out.

Based on the time line of these previously mentioned GA operated routes to Europe, when did GA operated their LAX-HNL-Biak-DPS service. I know LAX operated with D10, 743's for sure.... were these the same A//C types used to Europe one time or another?

I flew GA LGW-AUH-BKK-DPS-BKK-AUH-LGW in 1999, MD-11 both ways. Was in business class and as a non-smoker, they sat us in the 1st class section (1st class not for sale on this route). 1A/B all the way. i remember eating so much on that journey because every single flight way a full meal service.
