Can someone tell me anything and everything they might know about the 335? I can't find anything on it. I take it that means it isn't official from Airbus yet but still, if someone knows some of what the statistics for this a/c might be, I would love to know. Thanks!

The 335 is a shortened 332, same way as the 333 is a stretched 332.
For a long time it was known as 330-100. Airbus says that they changed the name to 330-500 to indicate that it has a longer range than its sisters just like the 340-500. Neither the 335 nor the 345 have flown yet.

Preben, I understand the 332 is a shrunk 332 and not vice versa.
L´espace 180, yes that´s right; nobody orders 300 and 310 any more, so they have to think...

The problem with the A330-500 is that it's a compromised aircraft.

Basically, it now seems like a super shrink of the A330-300, the original. With that comes the problem of the aircraft being uneconomic with its oversized wing and it wont be able to fly shorter haul routes such as the A310 as economically as possible.

Think of it as an economic compromise like the A318. Think about it, aircraft are strengthened as they are stretched. Airbus has had shrunk one model from the -300, and will do so with the -500. Does that mean that they will "weaken" the -500. It will probably be too heavy as well.

Airbus, bring us a real A310 successor and B767 competitor. The A3XX is a nice dream for the future, but we need a new A310/B762 successor. Currently the best aircraft for the job is nothing apart from the B762. What do AN, SQ, LH have to replace their 200 seater short/medium haulers?

Skystar is right.
The A330-500 is too big and heavy and with 12000km range it isn't an economical successor to the A300/310.
In fact Airbus started to think to the A330-100 as a shortened A330-200 but with an improved A300 wing.
This would be too expensive to develop so they decided just to short the current A330-200.
Giving it a huge range it is a possible competitor to the B767-200ER but I don't think the market for such an aircraft is so big to justify the investment.
Anyway, the A335 is still a project and might be changed before the official launch.
What do you think about a stretched A321 to compete with B757-300 and replace the A310?

There are two versions of the A330-500 out with two different MTOW and thus different ranges. Sure, for Hapag Lloyd and Lufthansa, both are too heavy and have a too long range. But for SIA's needs they would be perfect.

Airbus is right to look for a big enough market. The A310 was lacking range for a bigger succes. This aircraft was good for the needs of the launch customers (amongst them Lufthansa and Swissair), but they didn't need that much range. I don't thinkm that Airbus will do this mistake a second time.

Airbus has also some order commitments, depending on a production launch.

A single aisle as replacement of the A310/B767 is not always welcome. Thisn really depends on the airline needs.

While talking to a Canada 3000 A330 pilot on a recent flight he stated (if i remember corectly) that it will have a very high passanger capacity and, consequenly shorter range.

Just like the 747SP, super shrunk aircraft with super performance but higher operating cost. I doubt whether it will be as successful as the A300 and A310. I think it will perhaps be popular among current A340\A330 operators but not among A300 operators.

Hey i remember reading in an old issue of Flight International, that the proposed A330-500 is to have a different wing based on the A300-600.

Is that true?

I hope AI selects the A330-500 to replace its large fleet of A300 and A310-300's.

The A330-500 is supposed to replace both the A300/A310. I read in AW sometime back that there was supposed to be two versions with different ranges. A new 200 seat widebody is needed for A300/A310/767-200 replacement, but it is unlikely that BA or Airbus will build one soon.

Why don't they re-engine one version with the A320 engine, kindove like the A340's have, that way they would be able to fill the holes in the short haul markets and then provide a version with the RR's or GE's for long range high performance flight

its sad i still dont find the A310 old enough to be un wanted, cant they update it instead of building a new a/c

Updating oldfashioned fuselage designs is something done exclusively by Boeing (like with the B737, B747 and B767). Airbus has done it once (with the A300-600) and it immediately understood that this is not give you the best result you can have. It's always a compromise.

Airbus has done it once (with the A300-600)".....that's not totally true, come on! the A330-200/300 and 340-200/300/500/600 is basically the same fuselage as the basic A300 but streched and with new only once with the A300-600 .....thats wrong.
