BCN-LGW Summer 2013, Over Supply?

Thu Mar 21, 2013 3:05 pm

This year they'll be four airlines on this route.

easyJet continue their well established service.

Monarch continue their recently introduced service.

BA start their re-introduced service, with a new 'hand luggage' only fare as an option.

Vueling start a brand new service.

Is there really enough demand to make money on this route?

Right.

Then this year they'll be five airlines on this route.

I am surprised that no other Spanish carrier has done this route in the past (correct me if I'm wrong). I would have thought that IB would have done it years ago, but nope. I am also surprised that VY didn't start this route ages ago too. Nice to have a mixed bag of airlines operating into LGW, but it's a shame that they will all be A320 or A321's.

Norwegian flies 73's IIRC. Looking at the fares and availability, they're also offering wifi onboard as well.

ZB will be using the B757 on the route on certain days.

Won't BA be operating a mix of A319s and B734s?
Look for the ridiculous in everything, and you will find it

Still 5 airlines operating the route tho.
Plenty of seats on offer, good for anyone looking to fly that route as prices will probably be very competitive.

BCN is a pretty popular destination from London - fares aren't cheap over the summer, even with 5 carriers competing. And as the "spring/summer/autumn" continues being draber and wetter than expected/hoped for, more people will pay a bit extra for a bit of last minute sun.

I think BA only have a few 319s in LGW, and these are reserved for the routes that need the extra range (e.g. Paphos/Canaries).
http://my.flightmemory.com/shefgab Upcoming flights: AMS-RIX-BUD-VDA,ETH-TLV-FCO-LHR,STN-TXL-LCY,LTN-CPH-LTN,LGW-SZG,MUC-LHR

Not 100% true. Yes the new services to TFS and ACE are A319 operated (And looking very full, I might add) however they are also going to FCO/NAP/VCE/SKG/BRI and thats only a small selection of BA's services this summer that I looked at.

Looking at BCN, it has around 3 or 4 flights per week, operated by the A319.
