Malindo Air Takes Off - 22 March 2013

Fri Mar 22, 2013 1:27 pm

Another history in the Malaysian aviation scene was created earlier today when Malindo Air (OD) took off on its inaugural flight KUL-BKI.

OD is a Malaysian unit of Indonesia's largest airline, JT, who owned 49% of OD.

OD is currently serving 2 destinations from KUL: BKI (3 daily) and KCH (4 daily).

Their expansion will cover MYY, SDK, BTU and SBW in Malaysia and TRZ, DEL, HKG, CAN and SZX.

Fleet: 2 brand new B737-900ER (9M-LNF, 9M-LNG). The 3rd one is coming next week. OD is the first B737-900ER operator in Malaysia.

OD chooses to be a hybrid carrier, like JQ, where a business class product is offered along with LCC-priced Economy product. OD competes head on with the incumbents in the already very fierce competition in Malaysia, state owned MH and Asia's largest LCC, AK.

OD operates from the Main Terminal in KUL (same terminal with MH) but will move to KLIA2 on 28 June 2013 (AK's brand new LCC terminal).

Economy Class
::32" inches seat pitch (better than MH at 30")
::Complimentary Check in baggage allowance up to 15 kg (AK charges for check-in baggage)
::Complimentary Snacks (a bun and a cup of mineral water) [AK sells food onboard]
::Complimentary In-Flight Entertainment (not offered by AK)
::Fly conveniently from Main Terminal Building KLIA
::Enjoy the convenience and safety by using our aerobridge (AK does not use aerobridge in KUL)

Crew:

Cabin crews are wearing a traditional kebaya with batik sarong. The motif on the batik sarong and the neck tie of the cockpit crew is the same as per JT's cabin crew uniform in Indonesia. There has been no sighting of a OD male cabin crew yet. Another airline in Malaysia, FY, is currently only employs female cabin crew.

Based on initial feedback from local enthusiasts, OD stands a big fortune in Malaysia. Their image is good (unlike the parent JT), their Business class product is shockingly better than MH, their Economy class product is better than MH with the exception of the meals and it seems that should they price their products right, they will be able to steal a lot from MH and AK's existing market shares.

The domestic market shares in KUL from 2007 until 2012 is as follows:

We shall see if AK can maintains its staggering 62% domestic market shares in Malaysia for the year 2013. Definitely interesting times ahead.

From Malaysian consumers point of view, OD is much welcomed as it provides another options, their hybrid product seats nicely in between MH's premium product and AK's budget product and most importantly, they seem to b able to price competitively.

So all the best of luck to OD and godspeed!

All is good, and I wish them luck, but the one thing I've been wondering about Malindo is - how are they going to make money? They are planning to, or will have to, offer a product better than MH at a fare close to AK. This makes me feel that OD's main priority, at least for the next 3-5 years, is being an experiment on what strategy works to counter AK Group's growing dominance.
The opinions above are solely my own and do not express those of my employers or clients.

FY doesn't fly from KUL anymore. All of their flights are x/Subang so not sure if that graph is accurate. Also FY is part of MH so those numbers should be combined.
