Brilliant - and if this is indeed the case, Boeing needs to fire the whole marketing department. Are they so lacking in ideas?

As silly as the name may be, let's not fool ourselves into thinking that it will actually make a difference in sales.

When they get the weight back down on the 787 they are going to relaunch it as a diet 787. Then the cherry flavour will be launched.

I have never and will never say "Dreamliner" when referring to the 787! It's a stupid name that sounds stupid. And to be frank, it was a nightmare of a program and continues to be a nightmare of a program. As for this MAX, NEO, NEXT, XWB, -8 or -9 crap, just name planes in sequence! the 777-400 sounds a whole lot better than 777NEXT! And 737MAX, what the hell is that about! Naming it MAX means it can't get any better, so what happens when a new model comes, 737MAXMAX? I just call the 787-8 the 787-800 anyway, and will blindly ignorantly call the 777NEXT (god that sounds awful) the 777-400. I need a drink! Rant over!

What is wrong with 777-400 and 777-500. I am told that the fixation on the number 8 has something to do with the Chinese belief that it is lucky. Well it might be lucky for the Chinese but it doesn't seem to be too lucky for Boeing. The 787 seems to be the worst experience they have had in five decades. The 747 -8 isn't exactly my idea of good fortune. Lets go back to the old days when Boeing was great and start with the 777-400 . That should be a good omen if one looks at the 747-400 or even the 737-400.

I'm just really worried what they are going to name the aircraft built after the 797...NOT. Who really cares what the names are? Is there an airline that the name of the aircraft is a factor in their decision to purchase?

Dreamliner won the competition that B put up for the public. Ecoliner was just as cheesy IMO.

Actually the public decided that name iirc.

I would have called it Plastic1..

There won't be another 737 generation after MAX. Actually, even MAX was not meant to be, as Boeing wanted to sell their all-new narrowbody 737 replacement. Unfortunately, Airbus made AA offer they could not refuse, Boeing could not beat it with NSA and the rest is history...

Yes agreed. In addition with the 787 troubles it was unlikely that Boeing had the engineering capacity or financial means to built the all-new narrow body.

And then it has to be the "Max" or the "Next" or the "XWB". Wow, so extreme to the max. So next generation. So out there, down with the kids, futuristic, new age blah blah whatever. God I hate corporate marketing departments.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could just go back to the days when things were 'Good'. As in, "It's a good plane." Nope, we have to super sensationalize everything. Can't sell anything unless we use employ a healthy dose of hyperbole in the branding.

AeroKiwi, I feel your pain. Just be glad you live in Middle Earth where people are a bit pragmatic and grounded in their expectations. I fear your head would explode if you were subjected to just 1 hour of the commercials featured during TV PrimeTime in the States. As long as Airbus or Boeing do not feature pilots/co-polits rapping and breakdancing with their Microsoft Surface Tablets in the Cockpits of the new 777NEXT or the A350XWB (narrower than 777,747,380...but it's still extra wide?), then the likes of you and I will survive.

Boeing could take a page from Lee Iacocca and Carol Shelby and name it the 777GLH (goes like hell) for the 8 and 9 models, and then the 777GLHS (goes like hell somemore) for the 8LR.

Fearing that the public would view the DC-10-20 as an older or less capable plane than the DC-10-30 because it had a lower number, they asked Douglas to renumber it the DC-10-40.

That is stated in the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 book I have.
Quoting HBGDS (Reply 46):
Not a bad idea. After all, they renamed the MD-95 the Boeing 717, and when one of "us" airline nuts called them up to say that the number had already been used in-house in relation to a 707 variant, all he got was blank looks. In other words, history shmistory, so let it fly!!!

They knew they already had a 717-100, and so when they "changed" the name from MD-95 to... the 717, it's the -200.

And my    on this "marketing" scheme... There's an addage... "K.I.S.S" = Keep It Simple Stupid... I agree w a few others... just use the next inline number that worked for many decades.

I wouldn't mind if it were simply called the 777-8 and the 777-9 with the "NEXT" moniker being applied to the project only and not the aircraft itself; a la 737NG (it's not called a 737 Next Generation -800, now, is it?)

Those renderings look superb; I can't wait to see the 777X in the metal. Thanks for sharing.

I spoke to my marketing friend again on the phone to question the truth behind his statement with the 777X being named the 777 NEXT. He continuously stated that he is telling the truth. However it was interesting as he mentioned there was an alternate branding option being the MAX (777 MAX) name from the 737 MAX. This option I believe is not faulted as it provides commonality with the name for a future prospect.
