LH To Introduce Premium Economy In 2014

Mon Mar 25, 2013 9:14 am

Just reported: LH will introduce a "Premium Economy" class in 2014. LH says that customers are demanding such a class. About 10% of seats will be offered as Premium Economy. The design of the new seats will be presented in early 2014. Fares will be closer to economy prices than business class prices.

Now that Business Class is almost like First Class ten years ago thats no wonder, the difference between Eco and Business has become much too big.

About time too. Most major airlines have already adopted this new class of travel. I read somewhere that for BA, their World Traveller Plus cabin is their 2nd most profitable cabin after Club. First is 3rd, and economy is 4th.

I hope LH include aspects of the C service (catering etc) like NZ and QF do, rather than just having Y stuff.

Way back when the likes of BA/VS first introduced Y+ it was just an economy class service with more space. Now of course it is evolving into a separate class of service as well as being more spacious than Y.

One question is if their subsidiaries like OS and LX will adopt the same?

Well, that's exactly what I would like to see (and probably not only me). I don't need the bells and whistles of a business class, but I am 6ft-whatever.

Me too, though all depends how they position this premium Eco. Will it be just a few cm more legroom, 10 cm more for a maximum 20% higher fare, or will they charge 50% more for a slightly more comfy seat and a better meal? The first option would be perfect for me, as I am only interested in more legroom.

Me too. But I still think a seat that you can physically fit into should be basic configuration even in Y.

I don't understand why they didn't do this sooner... or start replacing those business class seats sooner. Anyway, I guess they are involving a limited number of FFs in the design process, as they have previously done on similar projects IIRC. Does anyone know a thing about that?

Yes, absolutely, but if you look at women, kids and short men under 1,70m the current Y-standard is probably ok for 75% of the passengers. But its a grave oversight if 25% are ignored for a longer period.
The more I think about it, is it even just that only because you are tall that you should pay more for the ticket? Isnt that outright discrimination? Shouldnt people over 1,85 m not get more pitch for free?

In the case of LH, I think their new economy class seats have done a lot to improve legroom. I found it quite bearable the last time I was in one on a long-haul flight. But you do still have to cope with inadequate backrests if you're taller than average.

I agree that the new Ecoseats are a step forward. My comment was a general one addressed to all airlines.

There is still quite a variation between the airlines. Flew AA MCE MIA-LHR last week and although it's an exclusive mini cabin with more leg room (welcomed!!), the service, food and miles were the same as normal Y. Same for UA last time I flew UA Y+.

The product is slightly augmented with BA but even more so with VS where you get a separate checkin, pre boarding, welcome booze, better meal service on crockery, curtained off cabin, more points and miles. Still the best Y+ I've flown.

I hope they plan to introduce a real premium economy (like VS, BA, BR, or AF) rather than the Y+ offered by UA, DL or KL.
The latest J product utilizes as much as 2.5 to 3x floor space of a Y seat.Very comfy, but cost prohibitive.
A product that utilizes 1.5x (one seat less per row, remove every 7th row) and costs twice as much will work for me.

Happy Travels

It's rather taking LH that long to implement? In the last 2+ years, my co-workers and I have opted to UA because of lack of Y+ on the ORD - FRA route.

I don't have the link at hand, but in another interview a couple weeks ago LH stated that the seats would be a complete redesign, rather than taking the current economy seats and just adding a bit of legroom.

AA has wider seats in MCE on the 777-300ER. On other aircraft, the seats are the same.

That is great nice. As I like to sleep on longhaul flights a premium economy class is a option I will always consider. All I need is more room for my legs and a little bit more in width to slide down a little bit and lean sideways to the window/wall panels of the cabin (assuming I get a windows seat).
That is definitely not possible in normal economy class today, if the neighbouring seat is not free. At least if you are quite tall.

I hope LH goes the BA way with a reduced number of seats in one row AND more legroom. All I need.
