Any B 747 Classic Operators On Earth Still?

Fri Apr 05, 2013 4:55 am

Any B 747 classic operators on earth still? What airlines apart from Orient Thai? Where do they fly them to?

Also which is the longest ever B 747 classic route? Also which is the longest B 747-300 route?

747 Classic? Tons of them... Iran Air, for one, and plenty of cargo operators.

Last month I observed an interesting contrast between quad-jets, in terms of the difference between generations of airliners: I was in the north terminal at JED, and I saw an Iran Air 747-200 taxi past the terminal, shortly before I boarded an Emirates A380 to DXB

Just some that I can think of:

Air Atlanta Icelandic
Pakistan International Airlines
Southern Air
Saudi Arabian Airlines
Public service announcement: "It's" = "it is". To indicate posession, write "its." Looks wrong, but it's correct grammar!

SV still own five 747 168Bs. They are HZ-AIA, 'ID, 'IE, 'IG AND 'II. All five have been withdrawn from use and have been reported as being parked at JED.

Yes, but their B747-300s are still flying regularly. I would consider those Classics as well.

Not true. They were retired from service almost a year ago. Replaced with 77Ws now.

Iran Air,

Right. Iran Air still flies the SP, and they may be the only ones still flying the SP. You won't be able to fly on a 747SP ever again unless you go to Iran. I believe that there are also a few 707s out there that are still airworthy.

Oh, lest we forget, Ernest Angley's Ministry still operated a 747SP for their crusades and missionary work. Named "Star Triple Seven," she can regularly been seen here in CLE clearing customs before continuing on to her base at CAK

All classics at Southern have been phased out. Evergreen too, though they are not all parked in their final state.

Kalitta has some classics that are to continue operating for awhile, but the clock is likely ticking.

where else would they be?

as over 50% of the passenger 400's are now around 20 years old even they'll start disappearing from the skies in an ever faster rate over the next few years

Tough to imagine UA and DL long-haul U.S.-Asia without them now though. DL just updated the 744 interior...better IFE than is on their 77L or UA 772/744...

BTW...was surprised to see UA895/896 (ORD-HKG-ORD) switch to 772 from 744...I've taken that flight 5-6 times in the last 6 months on different days of the week and it was always FULL in all 3 classes... (sorry for the off-topic)

UA 895/896 was switched to a 772 as part of UA's decision to base all the 744s out of SFO (having them close to a maintenance base helps with their otherwise poor dispatch reliability. )

Oh, I think there is another good 5 years or so left at DL, not least as I'm not sure they have any current orders that would replace the lift. But as DL has some of the earliest 744s around, they'll be gone sooner rather than later. I'm glad they refurb'd the interiors, they were getting very ragged. From a passenger perspective, the new interior makes it look like a brand new airplane, so as long as they continue with the high quality maintenance there's no reason it can't see a good few years service until it hits a really major overhaul milestone, and 99% of passengers will have no clue they are on a 20plus year old aircraft.

Any ideas how the dispatch reliability of SV 744 is? Worried as I have an upcoming JED DMM MNL, only 4 units in the fleet makes it pretty unstable.

Only about 249 744s are 20 years old so far (LN973 has its 20th b-day today). Of the 694 built, that's only about 36%.
