Reports Airspace Over Boston Is Closed

Mon Apr 15, 2013 8:42 pm

Hi everyone,

I am watching to coverage of the explosions in Boston on CBC and it was reported that the airspace over downtown Boston is closed and being patroled by fighters...can anyone confirm this?
Cheers;

They just set up a no fly zone. Area within 3.5 miles (below 3,000ft) of explosion is closed. I'm wondering how this will effect flights. Probably nothing too significant.

Apparently there was an explosion in a library in the flight path to BOS, so they have put a Ground Stop in effect until at least 17:30 Local time so they can change the arrival path, then a ground delay program for arriving flights will be in effect.

Looks like they switched to landing on 22 to avoid overflying the area.

A ground stop has now been issued. I would assume all flights currently en route to BOS will now have to divert.

I understood that the whole airspace was closed... If is not so, and just consist on avoiding any flying over the city, then I find it reasonable!

The cost is hundreds of thousands of dollars over a very low probability. There has been nothing that indicates a connection to the aviation system and the Back Bay is some distance from BOS.

Dozens of people are shot to death in the USA every day. Little is being done about that.

Issuing a ground stop at BOS is nothing but a knee jerk reaction.

Nowhere did AADC10 state agreement with the logic, just the ability to understand the logic should the decision be made that way. We may not agree with that, if it were my decision I would immediately close airspace.

However, I also would see the logic in keeping it open. This is not yet (thankfully) 9/11 and in 9/11 as we all know, air travel was the preferred weapon which is not the case in Boston. Lets hope it stays that way too.

My thoughts and best wishes to all affected with this atrocity.

Actually, there is plenty being done about it. But that's totally irrelevant.

There were three explosions with over 100 people injured. The situation remains very precarious. An abundance of caution is not a "knee jerk reaction" when you have no idea how many other explosive devices are potentially in the city.

So planes get delayed. Unforeseen costs rack up. Big freaking deal. Safety is the priority. The folks in charge agree. Sad to see you don't.

And what if these weren't the only attack locations? Why are you so opposed to spending extra money to keep the people safe?

No, it's a preventative action incase anything was done at or near the airport where it could pose a threat to safety.

Being somebody who has family and friends in Boston, some of whom usually visit the marathon, my prayers and condolences go out t everybody who lost anybody or was affected by this travesty in any way.

That's a very common configuration, actually. There are no regular departure routes out of BOS that overfly the city. The closest would probably be the departures off the 4s, but those make a quick left turn away from the city.

I agree it is a sudden reaction, but I think the proximity of Logan Airport to downtown Boston is likely related. It’s not unusual for a TFR to go up around the scene of a major incident like this one to allow for police activity. BOS is so close to downtown boston where the explosion was that a TFR could be over BOS airspace or block the arrival or departures.

The airspace was temporarily closed while the FAA reconfigured the airspace to avoid the TFR area. This lasted about 30 minutes. A TFR was put in place over the blast area and a 3.5 mi radius to ensure that emergency helicoptes wouldn't have to compete with other traffic in the area.

22 and 9 is NOT a common configuration. 22 & 27 is. We were on 4s & 9 and are now back on that.
During the JFK Library fire, they issued a ground stop. The 4s directly fly over the JFK Library. They went 22L & 15R briefly until problem resolved.

From reading comments above, it seems that the response in reducing air traffic was measured and not wildly inappropriate.

Very sad that an individual or group should have a desire to attack the public. My sympathies to the victims and the bereaved.

As I am from boston, where this Event took place is in a location almost over nearby approaches. I can see why they issued the TFR. IF this was a terrorist event, should the terrorists have small General Aviation aircraft to dispense some kind of weapons, they dont want them coming over the disaster site. The Ground stop simply made life easier for pilots. We have complicated Departure and Arrival flight patterns, so the FAA needed time to get routes around obstacles and avoid noise Sensistve areas around boston.

Perhaps not (and a poor taste of word for the pun IMHO) in any case, something fast developing like this is hard to guard against so best to ratchet up security while the situation is put under control.

Sad day for Beantown (my hometown in the US), I used to live 2 blocks away there on Boylston. RIP to the victims.

The FAA issued a TFR at 2055 UTC (4:55pm EDT) over downtown Boston with a 2 mile radius, surface to 3000 ft AGL.

Although this is a terrible terrible event, I think shutting down airspace is a bit of an overreaction. After the 7/7 bombings in London and the terror attack in Oslo, airports were not shut, nor was airspace. I guess history plays a huge role here.

Condolences to all those affected by this awful attack

As someone who was there, I can confirm that there were NO fighter jets present, however, the airspace was closed what seemed to be close to immediately after and full of various helicopters.

There was a TFR put around the finish line of the marathon. The runway configuration at BOS was changed for aircraft to remain clear of the TFR. There is strengthened security screening at BOS as well as police on scene to collect possible tips from witnesses.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Boston, but Oslo and London do not have a major airport 3 miles away from downtown where the event happened.

In the United States, it is normal for a temporary flight restriction to go up near a major event because of increased helicopter traffic. They need to keep airplanes and onlookers away. Boston is a rather unique airport because it is so close to the city, so the temporary flight restriction affected airport operations until they could get traffic patterns sorted out.

I boarded a EWR-BOS flight around 4pm. We pushed to get in line, then went to the ballpark with an update at 5:30. Ended up taking off around 5:20. On the ground in Boston by 6:00 pm.

Both of these attacks took place a considerable distance away from their cities' respective airports. BOS is less than 5 miles from Copley Square.

I don't think that the airspace was ever closed but restricted in case of the need for emergency evacuation transport.

When the extent of the incident was realized they opened up the airspace. I was on flightstats and there did not seem to be any major shutdown of the airport yesterday.
