Cathay In Buying Mood Again!

Wed Oct 25, 2000 1:12 am

This week's Flight reports that the one and only, the great Cathay Pacific is about to launch a bid to build its fleet (I was going to say "renew", but if you've got 744s, 777s and A330/340s, you don't really need to renew!!).

As an interim measure, it will take two undelivered 340s, intended for SIA. Presumably both will be in service by Summer 01. It also intends to take 3 346s from ILFC for delivery in 9/02, 10/02 and early 03.

Currently, it has issued requests for proposals for 11 346s/773ERs and 6-8 3XXs/747Xs and is also said to be interested in 10 more 330s and 6 747-400Fs. On the freighter front, it is also interested in taking a freighter version of the 747X if it comes to fruition.

So, without drifting into Boeing -v- Airbus territory here, I think both manufacturers will emerge from this with quite a lot to show for their efforts.

Is it true that Cathay are replacing their 747's with Airbus on the Vancouver and JFK Routes over the winter? Their website shows only "jet" as the aircraft type on most flights.

I do certainly hope that cx orders the 777-300ER, since I think it will look awesome with HUGE GE90s, looong fuselage and 767-400 style wingtips.. The only problem is that cx employ Trent on their 777s, but I hope that won`t stop them from buying the superb -300ER..

Cathay will most probably buy from both, Airbus and Boeing, as they always did. It's their philosophy and apparently it isn't that bad.

As for the importance of Cathay, I think, one of the toughest wars in this order battle will be A3XX vs B747X, followed of course by the usual A340 vs B777.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see the result.

I like it how cathay is buyign more A340's and A330's. They look smashing on in the airline colours. I think the A330 seems to match Cathays routes perfectly and economically, i read on CX's website that they were "please with the A330's performance" .
The A340's are used on the Canadian routes, but i believe that is only in the "low" season, but im really not sure
Cathay Pacific's route CX251 to London/HRW is covered with a 747-400 during "high" season and an A340 during"low " season. So im not perfectly sure if they do this on the canadian route.
I remember when Cathay bought all those A340's, A330's and 777's and adding the new colours , they really had nice adverts too, i think that was when CX was really in the Buying mood!

Isn't true that CX operates two flights to LHR every day with CX 251 using 747 and CX 255 using A340?

Yes CX255 does go to London/HRW but with 747-400.
CX also goes to Manchester but was operating a A340 when i travelled with them.

Looking at the trend that Cathay orders RR powered aircraft when available, I would think they would order the A340-600 over the 777-300X. What do you think? The only non RR aircraft they have is the A340, but it is not offered with RR engines.

I agree; as I said, the airline is to lease 3 A340-600s from ILFC while it decides between the two types; well, if that isn't a giveaway . . .

And don't forget, the A340-600 is RR powered.

Finally, the airline may well also choose to buy more standard 773s, which would of course be RR powered.

I think they are very reliant on their A340's and A330's which they have many of, and i think they are pleased witht heir performance so i should think the would choose the A340-500/600.
Sv11 i should think that it is easier to have a fleet that has mostly RR engines than having a mixture of P&W, RR, CFM, etc. Possibly easier to maintain or something? i wouldnt know but any suggestions on this?

Cathay's Canadian Routes

Trevor:

CX flies the A340 to Toronto, but has two daily 744 flights to Vancouver year round. One of the Vancouver flights continues on to JFK.
