I do know there are a lot of factors involved in a diversion, but still there are some I understand. While one AA flight is being diverted to AUS, another that was holding above AUS is now headed to MSY...

Austin gets very crowded on nights like this.

The aircraft holding over Austin diverted to New Orleans probably had more available fuel than some aircraft which will not be routed into Austin.

And going to MSY will likely get the plane back into DFW ahead of some at AUS as that airport is has to refuel more planes than normal.

At this point, it might be easier to list the planes still on hold (VRD882, NKS747 and AAL1784, with TCF6017 and JBU259 about to do the same)

Flights have diverted as far as LIT and ELP, and there's a groundstop on all flights headed for DFW until 2300z.

CPA90 an hour away from DFW. Shall we take bets on where it'll go?

WFAA is reporting two confirmed fatalities from tornados in Hood County near Granbury - about 50-55 miles southwest of DFW.

Worst cells appear to be tracking south of DFW heading west to east.

Might also mention that Southwest is also diverting a lot of flights from DAL.

Flightaware says groundstop is due to tornado!!! Was there a tornado at the airport. And why in the hell would they have a ground stop until 11pm TOMORROW?

Must be getting full on the ground. NKS747 held for about 30 minutes, then diverted to OKC but was re-directed to AMA en route...

New weather alert, new advisory, ground stop extended by an hour to midnight local.

There was a tornado warning for a possible tornado in some rotation in a storm cell near the airport.

The next round of storms is coming in directly upon top of the airport and to the east a couple miles they are getting hundreds of lightning strikes per hour.

What I'm seeing is a ground stop until 1201 AM Thursday -

FlightAware is just making another error in calculating the time.

EDIT - 2311 local DFW time - the airport experienced 60-70 mph shifting wind gusts within the past half hour. DAL getting those winds at this time.

An estimate 10 tornados have been spotted this evening in the area - not directly on an airport.

Well, I am guessing AA has been told to expect a reasonably quick improvement. Two diverted flights have just launched for DFW from ELP (2460) and SAT (1706) and AAL1784 that has been holding over West Texas for an hour (must have left with a lot of extra fuel) exited the hold headed for DFW too.

All at the same time, at my location, West of the airport, thunder is louder than it has been all night...

Correction: AAL1784 is going to ABI, not DFW. I guess after holding for an hour, the tank was getting low.

And Cathay didn't even wait. CPA90 can't land in DFW? Off to IAH immediately.

AAL791 (LGADFW) landed straight in. I guess the coast is clear from the North East.

Next up SKV7487, one of three flights cleared to leave their hold and land from the North West and South West. Ground stop ending now and no renewal. Perhaps we are back in business.

Not that I'm a dispatcher or anything but AA1079 RDUDFW fuel did seem a little short for thunderstorms in the area. Couldn't believe they didn't ask for more.

Thought for those down in Texas today. Springtime is here and ready to go. Significant outbreak appears to be on tap for Sunday/Monday from the Southern Plains to Midwest (IA/IL), so we are from from done with this yet.

We have this problem every so often when NYC gets bad weather... We can easily run out of gates and places to park aircraft, so we will advise diversion elsewhere... unless its a fuel emergency of course

I have a couple relatives who flew AA MBJ-DFW yesterday evening coming back from their honeymoon. They were suppose to fly DFW-STL last night but the flight was cancelled. They were trying to fly standby DFW-STL this morning but are still stuck in DFW. They are hoping to get out this afternoon.

My in-laws flew DSM-DFW-LAX last night. They got into DFW on time with some moderate turbulence on descent.

Their DFW-LAX (2493) was delayed an hour at the gate. My father-in-law said the winds were really strong and that the 757 was shaking all over the place while on the ground. The first hour in the air was also turbulent with the crew in jumpseats and they took a SE and then SW course for 20 minutes and then turned West.

I flew DFW PIA last night. My flight was scheduled to leave at 835pm. We didn't leave the gate until a little after 10. I grew up in DFW. I can't remember a time, when the sky got that dark before. The first 30 minutes of the flight were quite bumpy and spectacular in terms of the lightening show. The guys up front flying the erj did an amazing job of threading a needle through those thunderstorms.

Om May 17th, KLM restarted its summer only AMS-DFW-AMS service 5x/week with A332.

The flight operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

While I wasn't a dispatcher for that flight, I was working during the event (although for flts into DAL), so I'm guessing that it was a performance based decision, not a lack of planning issue. Plus, how do you know what their fuel load was? Had they already bumped freight or psgrs just to get alternate fuel on?

There are plenty of times where I know that TS are forecast, but I have a full load of psgrs and an aircraft that isn't the best performance-wise, so I have to sacrifice some extra fuel. In those situations, I have to just brief the Cpt ahead of time that he may only have 15-20 mins of contingency fuel and an alternate, so if he gets any hiccups, he's diverting.
