DXB Runway Closure And Resurfacing May 2014

Thu May 16, 2013 10:57 am

Would appear airlines serving DXB can expect lengthy delays with Dubai-DXB airport expecting partially closure next year from 01 MAY 2014 to 20 JUL 2014 for essential runway works. Airlines are being advised by DXB Airports that service reductions may be required.

Runway closures are needed to facilitate required maintenance procedures for both runways at Dubai International Airport, spanning an 80 day period commencing Thursday, May 1, 2014. Dubai Airports, in conjunction with its delivery partners, has reviewed different options for undertaking the required airfield works. Based on the available information, and in the interests of minimising disruptions to the extent practicable to all of our airlines, the following plan has been developed.

Time to test out DWC

Ouch, DXB is pretty congested at the best of time, going 1 runway is not going to be pretty. What's EK's reaction to this?

I haven't read any statements from EK at this point. It's definitely going to be challenging!

Wow! A while back (5 or 6 years, IIRC), there was a crash closing one DXB runway and they powered through, but DXB grew tremendously since then. This will be an issue.

It is good DXB is giving a full year notice.

It will be brutal. Any bets on FlyDubai moving to DWC?    They might as well try out two airport operations. The question is, how many passenger flights could DWC handle? Obviously during the runway work non-scheduled flights will have no choice but to use DWC.

I'm trying to figure out how EK will get through that time... Their hubbing operation is going to be severely disrupted (to say the least).

I'm sure they were part of the painful decision. I see from the link in post #3 that the Southern runway will receive taxiway and lighting improvements. So long term this will improve operations. But May through July 2014 is going to be a cluster f&*! at DXB.

For the airlines who operate a daily or 2x daily operation into/out of DXB, rescheduling shouldn't be too much an issue (provided they aren't slot/curfew constrained at their home base) but EK is a different story. Can they simply just spread out their existing arrival/departure banks, which will mean connecting passengers will need to wait say 6-8 hrs rather than 3-4 hrs for their connecting flights? Or there so few 'quiet' periods at DXB that simply re-timing flights is not an option. Do EK just cut one their arrival/departure banks for the entire period?

Well, May - July is the peak for DXB and rest of the Middle East. Hence, this shall certainly have a negative impact on quite a few airlines .

I see the later.

See HB-IWC's excellent analysis of DXB:

Positive for SQ, EY, QR, AI, 9W, and TK...

What do you do with the planes and crews? That is an amazingly expensive option...
