AC will begin to receive their 787's in 2014. It's going to take awhile for the deliveries. As the 767's are replaced, I'm curious to your speculation of future routes offered by AC to/from the focus cities of YOW, YHZ, YEG.
My first guess would be YEG-FRA. Maybe not daily, but at least 4/week. Any other speculation?
As the current 767's are moved to Rogue...er, I mean Rouge...will these focus cities also see any increase of wide bodied service?
Others have speculated it's a one to one replacement of 787 to 767, but there are 7 additional aircraft over the 767 fleet.

Here at YOW we have LHR year-round and FRA in the summer. I can see these staying 763 'till the end, maybe even becoming rouge routes.

Doubt they will go Rouge, they aren't the right sort of destinations for Rouge. LHR because it is a high cost route to only serve with an economy service, LGW service in competition with Transat is more the Rouge model. FRA on the other hand connects YOW to a big Star hub, which again isn't what Rouge is for.
Can see 787s on the YOW transatlantics once 787s start operating from YYZ and YYC, as the YOW aircraft often rotate from those cities in LHR and FRA - especially in recent winter seasons when YOW/YYC-FRA operate on alternating days.

We're currently looking at March 2014 for the delivery of the first AC 787.
Only 35 frames to going into the production line ahead of it.
There'll be a total of 7 delivered to AC in 2014 with another 5 in 2015.

I doubt the Focus cities will get that much action with the 787s for a while as AC looks likely to want to use these to open up routes out of its hubs first, or deploy its new fleet addition on existing sectors. That will in turn open up capacity for other routes with the existing fleet if required.
Its already made it clear that Australia is on the radar for new service and there a number of other services that they will likely want to use the 787s on first.

YOW-FRA is year round as well. Not daily in winter, but definately year round. Also, I highly doubt these two flights will go Rouge. AC has little to no competition on Europe-YOW (only TS to LGW once a week in summer), so they will stay mainline, in my opinion.

Starting in March of 2014 AC will receive its first B787-8 with 7 being delivered in the year. A total of 15 8s will be delivered. In August of 2015 the first of the 9s will arrive, with 11 8s in service by then. The remainder of the order will 9s for total of 15 8s and 22 9s.

The exact breakdown of model, in this case the 788 or 789, can be made up to a certain period before assembly begins. I would imagine all the first group is already specified as 788 as we are under a year now. At one point a few months ago it was about 50/50 split between the two models. But that keeps shifting according to conditions and routes. I am positive that options will be taken up. Again the economy and how well Rouge takes off will be two of the biggest factors how soon the options will be converted and how many.
Now that there is a code share with Etihad, IF the volume is there on the route that many claim, I would see a complimentary 3 or 4 day a week AC serivce. But frankly I don't think the numbers are there and there are many more priority routes. Again if there is volume we could see service eventually added to Ethiopia or Egypt sometime in the future.

The majority of the B763s will be transferred to Rouge over the next few years. Along with the transfer of aircraft, so will some routes that were once operated by mainline. YYZ to DUB is one example....
Another rumor is the Hawaii routes out west...
So yes, there will be some new routes started with the 787s!

In the thread from last December about Rouge that I linked here in a previous post, 'longhauler' says it's been announced that the 767 fleet will grow to 20. So the 37 787s won't have to replace 38 current aircraft.

I may be confused, but I seem to recall a winter season where YYCFRA was 4x weekly and YOWFRA 3x. Maybe two or three years ago.
The planes often swap at LHR though, as 889 one day is often not the aircraft that left as 888 the evening before - and in YOW they often rotate as well, for months 839 arrival will operate out as 888.

The Air Canada hubs are YYZ, YUL, YVR and YYC. Air Canada's "focus cities" are focus cities, not hubs.
The 787 will be used to replace the 767s in the mainline fleet as they are retired or moved over to Rouge. AC will also use them to open up new routes, which will most likely be operated out of the two largest AC hubs, Toronto and Vancouver. A few rumors that have been thrown around, for example :

YEG-LHR is daily for half the year (May through late October).

It may have been the case when LH also was operating their own aircraft on the route prior to terminating the service early last year,or was it the year before?

I think after the financial melt down in 2008/2009, the YOW-FRA route was down to 4 flights/week during the winter months. I seem to recall there was alternating with YYC, but I'm not 100% sure.
My hunch is the focus cities will see more 767's with Rouge. Certainly not on a daily basis to specific cities, but perhaps a few days per week. At YOW, I could see potential Rouge routes such as AMS, BCN, FCO and perhaps even BOD to take a swipe at TS's route from YUL. Winter time I could see flights into Mexico, Caribbean etc. Flights from those cities back to Canada could alternate between the various focus cities with either weekly or several days/week.
I don't see Rouge taking on the trunk routes from any CDN city to LHR, FRA, CDG.
One thing that Rouge will have to do to survive is not continuously filter all traffic through the hubs only. The seasonal vacation traveler wants to get to their destination with as little hassle as possible. Continuously flying through YUL, YYZ, YYC and YVR will not be desirable and vacationers will find other means to satisfy their travel requirements.
