Fedex 727 Last Flights Planned June 2013

Thu May 30, 2013 7:19 pm

From FX flight planning -

Last two domestic 727 flights will be operated from LFT and SBN on Friday, June 21.

Flight 1270 LFT-MEM departs 2241z that Friday and will be replaced by a 757 on the same route and flight number the next day.

Flight 1304 SBN-MEM departs 2343z that Friday and will likewise be replaced with a 757. Both flights are scheduled to arrive in MEM 14 minutes apart. It should be noted that 1304 originates at FWA so that is an extra market that will share in this end of an era.

The last two 727s flying in revenue service for Fedex will be operating in Latin America for a week afterward and will be returning June 29/30. Come July, no 727s will be flying for Fedex.

Unfortunately I do not have tail numbers yet although later on I'll be able to look them up. Maybe someone else has access to this.

Thanks for the info. Sad day to see the 727s go. Beside for Amerijet who else runs 727s regularly in the U.S? Thankfully being in MIA seeing a 727 is still not an odd thing with Amerijet hope they keep them for some time longer but its only a matter of time before they are gone too.

Does FEDEX still have the last B-727 built and if so what are their plans for it, hopefully it won’t be scrapped. It would be nice to see it parked together at the Museum of Flight with the first production B-727 they have at their restoration center

Boy that's a bummer. I love the 757s but it's always nice to see the 727s around. I saw one a week or two ago sitting at GFK. It was a pleasant surprise! I guess she only had another month left in her.

It was retired by FedEx some time ago. Latest A.net photo dated last October shows it stored at Lasham, UK

We donated one to AFD at AUS.

I was on committee since 2009 for donations.

Wow, these went away quickly. I know I saw one not long ago, but I can't remember where that was now. Didn't know that would be my last sighting of one. I'll miss those tri-holers.

Quickly?

You jest sir. This topic is visited as often at NW and their DC-9 retirements post DL. FX wanted to retire this fleet as far back as 2005.

With the NW DC-9s gone and now FX 727s......MEM is surely a lot quieter.

No....   Say it isn't so. The FX 727-100 is what started full size FX service to ROC . Then the -200,the A310,A300 now the MD-10-10. We got a couple FX 727 flights here last Christmas (flight # 727,too) . They all came and went in the dark.

I felt rather lucky going to get the mail from FDX and have my camera to get a picture of that old workhorse. It was N204FE, one of the original-built freighters for them. She looked a little worn.

Hey, at GFK, is that one still across the runway anchored down w/o engines etc? What happened with that one, looks (from the mud streaks on the fuselage) that it may have been an over-run and written off? A lot of us always wondered, but could never find out.

Thanks!

The final act of an outstanding classic commenses. I'll miss the first domestically made 3 holer. I took her for granted during her heydey (70's and 80's). Back then it was bigger bolder and bad ass wide bodies. I flew Eastern, National and DL back in those days to MIA. Since I travellled from my home town airport BWI, I felt rooked that I never got a wide body. Now, especially I'll cherish those flights. Add to this MIA "corrosian corner" is also just a memory; the chances will be diminished of seeing her anytime soon. On a side note, I wonder if that early 727 still sits on the ramp at EWR easily seen while traversing the New Jersey Turnpike? She was a landmark when cruising by EWR on my way to the NYC area and to the Catskills. I believe she wore Fed Ex colors.

Now that I'm thinking about it that 727 visible from the NJ Turnpike was the DHL bird with their old red bird livery.

There is still daily 727 at EWR. Pretty much 24/7 one at the ramp.

It was donated to GFK for fire fighting exercises in 2007. Was used in 2011 for a mass-casualty drill. Supposedly, on one of the pallets that has seats on it, one of those seats is from the DB Cooper hijacked 727, but, alas I believe to be a rumor moreso than not.

They had two 727s parked at EWR last weekend (5/25/2013), sitting side-by-side with a DC-10 behind them and an MD-11 to the side. One of the coolest pictures I've ever gotten!

Sad to see them go  . I know at MIA there is a FX 727 sitting on the AA maintenance
ramp. Stripped looks like there there doing some work or for training.

I'll get the tail number and why its there as soon as I can.

I'm sure the ones that have to service them aren't as sad to see them go.

It's another passing of the times, but I was sadder to see the L1011s leave various airline service and will be about as sad to see the various MDs sent off.

At least FX will be keeping 757s flying around long after they are out of airline service.

N235FE has been sitting in EWR since 5/10, landing gear time out 5/20 and retired awaiting disposition. N269FE & N495FE are in EWR as spares. N489FE is returning stateside from Brazil due time items running out, N469FE is taking its place so N482FE & N469FE are in Campinas Brazil til July and will probably be the last two schedule flying aircraft. As of today their are 14 airworthy 727.

Sorry about the iPhone quality, but you can see the two 727s in the foreground, with an MD-11 behind them and an MD-10 (or DC-10? I can't tell) in the far back. Also interesting to note, there was an a300 just out of the frame to the right as well.

Definitely an MD-10, as all the FX DCs were converted to MDs years ago. Good picture, even for a slow time of day it still shows the variety of aircraft at the EWR hub.

Ah so that is why it is there! I could never get a straight answer as to why it was there. It's a pretty good visual marker for downwind on 17R/35L.

FX has also donated a 727 to BUF for fire training purposes. So you'll be able to find one here even after the fleet is retired from flying.

The majority of the FX 727 fleet is being donated. It will be quite common to see them all across the country even at such small airports as HLN and PBG, they just won't be flying.

On a related note, FX1304 will not only be the final FedEx 727 flight in the US, but the last scheduled 727 flight into or out of FWA, period. That said, we could still see a 727 here, but only in the form of charters.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the 727 was operated into FWA by UA, AA, and DL (but not all at the same time). UA used theirs from the Caravelle retirements until they let ZW take over the FWA station, AA used theirs from the FWA station opening until the early 1990s when a mix of F100s and Eagle ATRs took over, and DL used theirs from the 1980s until the 1990s.

Even after pax operators at FWA stopped using the three-holer, it was still used for cargo. FedEx and UPS used the 727 into FWA, and Kitty Hawk based a substantial fleet of 727s at FWA. But first, the Kitty Hawk hub closed in 2007, then UPS switched their SBN-FWA-SDF flights to the 757, and now FedEx is sending their last US 727 flight through FWA. So in the course of six years, FWA went from cargo 727 haven to no three-holers.

IIRC, DL was using at least 1 72S into FWA when I moved there in 1971...I suspect maybe even the late 60s?

Beside for Amerijet who else runs 727s regularly in the U.S?

Once FedEx retires all of their 727s, Kalitta Charters II will have the largest fleet of 727s in the US. Other operators with multiple 727s include Amerijet, IFL Group (with the second and third to last last 727s off of the line, old FedEx birds), Roush, and Paradigm. There are also a few operators with only one 727. I'd estimate the 727 will still be flying around the states for 10-15 more years.

It'll be a very sad to see the last secheduled 727 flight. I think it is one of the greatest looking aircraft out there! It is just mindboggling to think that the 727 served with so many US based operators. They looked great no matter who they were flying for. AA, AS, CO, DL, EA, NW, UA, US, PA, WA Transworld Airlines (USA)">TW, WA, PSA, RC, UPS, Fedex, ATA. I remember seeing a picture of one in Ozark colors, not sure if they ever entered service with them. I think Southwest even leased a handful of them during the early 80s. A very impressive and very good looking aircraft!!!
Bring back Western Airlines!

Thanks for the info! Funny thing is I just bought a book about the D.B. Cooper hijacking this weekend! LOL

It's nice to be actually adding more 727's to the fleet these days, getting some newer models from good companies like ASTAR to replace some of the rougher, older ones. We still have an ex-Eastern bird built in 1970 flying around, in fact I put about 8 more hours on her in the last week. Our newest is from 1982. It's a great plane for what we do with them and you can get them at a bargin basement price.

Will any of the flights in the next two weeks come through DSM? I haven't seen any here in a few months - lots of nice 757s though, which I won't complain about.

I live west of the airport here, and it was always a great morning when I'd pull out of my driveway and head east towards work to see a FX 727 on departure from runway 23 starting its southbound turn toward MEM.

Only if the 727s are subbed in for maintenance. DSM was converted to a 757 ramp around a year ago although as long as the employees are still trained on the 727 type they could have seen those mixed in.

It would have been hard for Delta to use the 727 in 1971, as DL didn't fly the 727 anywhere until the Northeast merger in August 1972. DL's first 727s under the DL Boeing customer code (727-232 as opposed to NE's 727-95s and -295s) arrived shortly after the NE merger. Perhaps you're thinking of the DC-9, which DL flew into FWA from 1967 onward?

That said, while they were late to the 727 party, DL was the largest 727 operator in the world for many, many years. IIRC, as DL was retiring their 727s, FedEx became the largest 727 operator.

You are 100% correct..I stand corrected. And yes, I do remember the D9S quite clearly. I guess I was thinking maybe of just United because they kept an interesting mix of 727/72S/732 as they tweaked service thru the early/mid 70's.

maybe not always, but most of the time (say 74 thru April 80..the morning CLE departure was 72S , and for a long time continued from CLE to ATLand at times to JAX. The other sorta cool thing for a while in the late 70's was the evening arrivals from DEN (via SBN) and a late evening ORD flight into FWA, also via SBN..many clear nights you could see them both coming in from the northwest maybe 15-20 min apart. The flight from ORD, then deadheaded back to ORD with the mail..us airplane geeks would go out and stand at a section of fence where you could be close the gate and see the US mail truck come up and count how many bags of mail they tossed on..(Jesus, I guess we were bored on those summer nights!) The DEN flight in those days was always an 727 and that last ORD was a 72S.

I certainly remember taking a DL 72S direct FWA-FLL in 75 or 76 with stops in IND & ATL. It was a mix of D9S and 72 S service on DL at that time.

Great reminicsing ...you could be at Baer Field Raceways and it seemed they took off just behind ya by a hundred feet.! ( the old announcer would stop his narrative as he was drowned out by solid JT8D noise..then he would always say "wow look at her go!!"...

Later Amigo!

Funny you should mention Baer Field Speedway - it's still there in the same place and turns 50 this year. That said, there still is heavy JT8D action from FWA, but in the form of G4 MD-80s. (Probably will become CFM56 action with the switch to the A32x, unless G4 sends a 757 here.)
