Airline Load Factor Calculations

Fri Jun 07, 2013 9:18 pm

I was just reviewing AMR's reporting of their May load factor and I wondered how do codeshares factor into each airline's numbers? Does the operating carrier own the passenger in their numbers, or does the selling carrier? Or do both claim the numbers?

The operating carrier reports the number of revenue passengers carried by their metal, regardless of whether the passenger's ticket reflects their own flight number or that of a codeshare. A seat sold is a seat sold.

Load factor is one of the easiest calculations. RASM and CASM is where it gets messy.

Load factor is percentage of revenue customers. This includes everyone who bought a ticket using money, or frequent flyer awards, or coupons. This also includes seats sold through other airlines via codeshares or interline agreements.

Load factor does not count non-revenue travel including employees of the airline flying for business or pleasure or employees of other airlines traveling on industry discounted standby tickets.
