Boeing 787 At DAB Today, And Coming Again

Fri Jun 14, 2013 8:52 pm

Boeing 787 number 005 was at Daytona Beach Intl Airport yesterday and today, it left a few hours ago. It will be back Sunday for another overnight (not sure why, but glad all the same).

Anyone have an idea as to why it's here? Something ERAU related?

Fortunately they parked it where you could get a nice view of it from Midway Rd. Here's a few I took.

Saw it while driving by the airport yesterday. Pretty cool to see from a distance, I wonder what it it would have been like up close. Looks like I will be taking a ride on Midway come Sunday.

According to flightaware it is on its way to La Paz (some more high altitude testing?). I'm guessing Sunday is when it is coming back. Boeing has used Florida before as a stopover for test flights to South America, although I think it was SRQ.

I do not know why it stopped over on Friday but on Monday between 10am-12 noon it will be open for tours inside to all the riddle kids, It was supposed to be here back in February but never made it due to the battery fires. Hope that helps answer your question

It is ERAU related. The plane will be available to Riddle students and faculty. The Pilot is supposedly an ERAU Alumnus.

Cool info. Why does it go to La Paz for high altitude testing?

That does Mark, thank you for that. Very glad they will be allowing tours for some. February I might have missed it, glad its here now instead. Any idea around what time she'll be coming back in Sunday? I'd love to get pictures of her flying.

That thought crossed my mind. Working at the DAB Jet Center back in 1990 when Daytona had great, well airplaned airshows we had a manifest of all the military aircraft coming in with their fuel load, expected fuel to be fueled by us, how many crewmembers on board, arrival/depart times etc. It also had a column for how many of the crew were Riddle grads. Roughly half were, maybe a little more. That was also the reason, imo, that we had some of the most amazing go-arounds/flyovers/departing vertical climbs when the aircraft arrived Friday before the show and when they left Sunday night/Monday morning. I think they were showing off for their fellow Riddlians lol. Wouldn't surprise me if the 787 pilot is a Riddle grad and just wanted to bring the new bird home for a few

Because La Paz has an elevation of 4,061.5 m / 13,325 ft. DEN, for comparison, is merely 5,431 ft / 1,655 m.

Ah, makes perfect sense.

I'll have to give that a try. I like Backyard Boys BBQ in S. Daytona myself.
