FX 727 Final Revenue Flight, IND-MEM

Fri Jun 21, 2013 11:58 am

Ok, any spotters in Indy with nothing to do at lunch time? Today will be the final revenue flight of the 727 fleet, there is scheduled to be a ceremony at the west maintenance hangar on the north side of the airfield today at 11:30. Company officials and Boeing reps will be present, water cannon salute followed by a low flyby, then off to MEM where I am sure there will be a grand reception. Entrance to the hangar is limited to employees only that RSVP'd, however there will be plenty of vantage points to witness the water cannon salute and flyby. Btw, the final flight will be flown with A/C 481. A beautiful day to retire a fine aircraft with a rich proud history.

Sad to see the 727 go. It had such a great career as a passenger airplane, and then a really great second life as a freighter. Even harder to believe that it is being replaced by the airplane that was designed to replace it more than 30 years ago, the 757. It will be missed!

Why is it holding - waiting for something to be set up in MEM?

Indeed, with FE having retired them, and CCI having parked theirs, ROC, like many airports in the USA, probably won't see any 727 movements anymore - remarkable when you think that from about 1970 to 2000, the 727 was virtually omnipresent at US airports. Kelowna, Purolator, Amerijet, Cargojet, and Kalitta Charters are now virtually all that's left, and that's maybe 30 aircraft in service at any time, tops, most of which operate primarily in Canada.

We lost ours when Capital Cargo retired thier 727's. Haven't had one since. I have my flightware alerts configured for such.

The was the plan before this AM at AFW. FDX1167 took an MX delay and FDX1185 a 727 adhoc moved some of the cargo. 1885 will come back to AFW Monday night for OAK. The 727 lives to fly another day

Timing a fly by at it's retirement party.

Very sad to hear. The 727 is probably my favorite airliner of all-time and it's too bad we'll be seeing fewer and fewer of them in the near future. I'm glad I got to catch one (my first in over a year) departing OAK a few weeks ago when I was down there.
Picked a hell of a week to quit sniffing glue.

I wonder why that FX 727 is still sitting at MKE?

The final B727 revenue flight in the B727-200 for Fedex leaves SBN for MEM in a few hours.

End of an era. Great airplane that lasted a long time in the skies.

Yes, but they won't be seen anywhere in the United States but MEM when they return.

It's one of the many 727s FX has donated to airports for use in ARFF and other types of training.
B-52s don't take off. They scare the ground away.

So N469FE and N482FE are the only ones still active now?

Yes. I don't believe the 727s will even be available for substitutions after the end of the month. Corporate training has already put out notices to ground crews to let 727 training lapse.

I believe N493FE is FLT1885 OAK-AFW Monday night, N257FE,N481FE and N213FE are still active for another week.
N469FE and N482FE are active another two weeks then the MD11 takes over the south cone fling.
They will have to ferry N235FE,N269FE, and N495FE out of EWR to their final destinations. N203FE,N204FE,N211FE,N221FE, and 234FE will need ferries to their final destinations.

And they were the ones to take delivery of the last 727 built 29 years ago. That means any 727 in the world still airworthy is older than that!

Does UPS still have 727s? Not sure they do but I think AmeriFlight does, I see those often in MIA when I fly down there.

No, they've been gone since about '05 maybe. Amerijet is the company in MIA that has a few left.

It will be hard to believe when the last 757 and 767 are retired. They seem so modern now. We are already seeing the 737 Classics going. Sad days ahead.

Where are they now? Is N234FE still in SAV?

What about N223FE and N489FE?
