I'm receiving some Twits about serious incidents at some Brazlilian airports amid the latest riots and GRU almost "occupied" and under a chaotic situation.
Are this incidents true and really that serious ? Any diversions reported ?
All I can find in the TV now is Brazilian President Dilma Roussef talking and talking but nothing else...

Riots were blocking the road to GRU. Some protesting was also taking place near CGH.

Passengers have to step out from cars and buses and walk miles to reach the terminal because the protests blocked the main access freeways. Just Bad.

United is delaying departures from GRU by two hours (three for EWR).
Flights to GRU are still planned to leave on time. IAH has a 30-minute delay due to late inbound.

A good friend of mine, FO @ Air France, landed yesterday without any problem @ GRU, but it took them 5h30 to get to their hotel in downtown Sao Paulo... It texted me yesterday night, their bus got stuck on the road, and they've even been "invited" by demonstrators to take shelter inside a nearby hotel during a riot...
Not really scary he told me, but rather impressive...

yes but media like the Daily Mail really love to exaggerate to get more clicks and etc..

Those are amazing photos! Lucky for JJ and G3 that they are able to get their crews from CGH to GRU, but I would think it would be nearly impossible for the foreign carriers to get their flight crews to and from GRU to downtown Sao Paulo. I know several crews stay at nearby airport hotels at GRU. Are they able to get to and from the airport hotels without delay?
Has GIG been affected in this way also?

From someone who is in Brazil and can give a bit more of an insider's look. The vast majority of demonstrators are law-abiding citizens who just want to show their dissatisfaction with what's been happening in various matters.
There is a minority of vandals who get most of the coverage and, again, strategic routes for the demonstrations that disrupt traffic is part of the strategy to get most visibility.
From someone who is in Brazil and can give a bit more of an insider's look. The vast majority of demonstrators are law-abiding citizens who just want to show their dissatisfaction with what's been happening in various matters.
There is a minority of vandals who get most of the coverage and, again, strategic routes for the demonstrations that disrupt traffic is part of the strategy to get most visibility.

No, Rio tends to always demonstrate either on representative city center avenues or on oceanic beachfront avenues. Though, yesterday, residents of the Barra district, feeling left out, organized a demonstration on an intersection. The result was just shameful, since it failed miserably as the district just emptied out at the thought of a huge gridlock.

Fair point. There are always opportunists who will take advantage of a situation. Hope it quiets down soon, I love brazil and hope to return for a third trip next year.

Latest demonstrations yesterday were "only" of 100K people in Sao Paulo. This things are very dynamic and unpredictable situations. But If I have to bet, things should be flowing to a normal situation, and by Thursday probably you would find the things are OK. Best of luck !!

Sensibly, I have planned these demonstrations to coincide with 5 drives from downtown SP up to GRU.
Last Friday (14th), a demonstration was anticipated so all the businesses sent their staff home after lunch. I gave up after taking 45 minutes to get from home to Berrini (by the Hilton) in the afternoon, where the Marginal Pinheiros was just not moving - and tried again at 8pm - still took 2 hours. This weekend I was off to Salvador for the Brazil - Italy match. Left home 3.30am Saturday - was parked up at 4.10am - and arrived back today at 10.20am, in the gym at Eldorado by 11.30am. Next Wednesday on BA to London, which *should* be OK as it leaves at 4.15pm, so will be out of here in the morning. Less confident about coming back on Monday night though. And then off to Bogota for the feriado on the 5th at 5pm - think I will leave in the morning and have a nice lunch in the GRU Marriott...
I don't fancy trying to get up there for any of the bank of evening departures to the US/Canada/anywhere else though.

Being pedantic, I suspect the definition of a riot where things are in control isn't a riot.

Funny timing, but last night received a 20% coupon including on premium fares from AA for tickets booked to Brazil for travel till end of September.
Between the current social unrest, and economic slowdown, seems its likely AA is finally feeling the excess capacity in the market.

This is a seasonal flight, probably cancelled because of low demand, as expected (not by AA) not because of the protests.
No surprises here LAXIntl. Too much capacity and now with the Brazilian Real around 2.20 per USD, I doubt the same number of Brazilians plan to travel as before. To compensate, leisure destinations in Brazil may become less expensive for Americans. Still, hotels need to charge less, services need to be less expensive, but a stronger USD helps that. Impossible that we continue to see Brazil/US with 60-65% Brazilians. Shall be at least 60% US dominated both because of income and size of population.

This am CNN reported a resurgence in protesting. They didn't mention anything about airports.
I may still play it safe and depart tomorrow vs Wed. I do get in about 6am so perhaps the roads from GRU may not be blocked. It will be an interesting experience doing a week of work in SP and Rio.
I will report in on my experience at GRU, CGH AND SDU.

JJ is also selling discounted premium fares on its flights to MIA and MCO. They announced r/t first class for less than $3500, but some restrictions applied (10 days minimum, boarding before December, etc.).

I live in São Paulo, and for the last 2 weeks the protests have begun in the afternoon (4-5pm). So, arriving at GRU in the morning should be enough to get to any point in the city by 6pm. Of course, the morning traffic jam will probably be the usual! Arriving 1 day before will certainly be less stressful.
I have flown out of CGH the last 2 fridays (6pm) and had no problems getting to the airport.
