ETAs For BA 787 Deliveries @ LHR This Week

Sat Jun 22, 2013 5:16 pm

British Airways have just confirmed to me in a Tweet that the first 787 is scheduled to arrive at LHR at 10.20 on Wednesday 26th, and the second at 11.25 on Thursday 27th.
http://twitter.com/British_Airways/status/348465728539738113

Times are BST presumably, so UTC+1

Any bets on the over/under of how many spotters will be out there. With so many great photographers in the LHR area, I'm guessing +25. One of the best looking 787's in the sky.

Happy spotting!

I have a question!
DO BA have to use one of their normal daily slots for delivery of this aircraft (in which case which flights are they cancelling)? Or, are one-off delivery flights like this permissable?

LHR isn't 100% full although this is a busy time if day, they'll fit it in without to much trouble

Interesting question, and quite appropriate - it might not be 100% but 98% isn't far off!

They must have a similar process in place positioning flights (777s between LGW and mx flights)

Let's see if BA announce what destinations will be served by the first 787s, once training flights are completed.

What are the bets? I know it as been mentioned several times that they would essentially replace 767s. But there are a few of those.
We shall have to see I still think that there may be a surprise or two in regards to new destinations, when more 787s arrive.

A clue to this may be a statement on the slot coordinator's (Airport Coordination Ltd) web site. In their Summer 2013 LHR report they state:

"From 1st February 2013, the following capacity reductions are introduced in each hour for the allocation of ad-hoc slots (slots which do not form part of a series of 5 weeks or more):

"- Between 0800-2155 UTC, the hourly capacity is reduced by 2 movements per hour.

"- Between 0500-0755 UTC, the hourly capacity limit is reduced to 0 movements per hour."

My interpretation of this is that what they call "Ad hoc slots which do not form part of a series of 5 weeks or more" are slots held on one side for use by Biz Jets and by primarily BA and VS aircraft departing or arriving on positioning flights:

1. On positioning flights to or from LGW or elsewhere as part of a transfer to or from the airline's Heathrow fleet

2. Ferry flights for BA aircraft to CWL or PIK for maintenance. (Those flying to or from maintenance at GLA usually do so on an operational (revenue) flight

3. Ferry flights for VS aircraft to heavy maintenance overseas

4. VIP flights e.g. long haul Royal Family charter flights (now quite rare)

5. Departing foreign airliners that missed their departure slot after going tech

An example is VS071 operated by VS 744 G-VROM yesterday (22 June). It positioned LHR-GLA. From there it operated GLA-MCO (also VS071) the first time this season this flight had been operated by a 744.

The above is guess work. If inaccurate any correction would be welcome.

I dont think you will see any surprises. Launching a new route (like CTU) requires months of forward planning, selling and advertising. Its not something BA will do on a whim to shock people.

Now that you mention CTU, that was, at least in my definition of the word, a surprise as far as I am concerned.

Not anywhere did I define "surprise" as a route to be put on "on a whim" with the specific purpose of shocking people.
I am sorry that you got the wrong end of the stick.

I would hope that CTU is not the last novel destination by BA, and just like CTU, they do the necessary ground work for it, as one would, naturally, expect.

Does anyone know of there is to be any coverage - maybe a stream from Boeing or on the BBC - of the handover of the first 787 and its arrival at Heathrow? I've checked the UK tv guides and can't see anything mentioned. Or is it just a case of hoping something gets into Youtube?

Anyone with a rough idea of what runways will be in use tomorrow morning? Might pop out to have a look and just need to figure out where to get off the tube.

According to the official timetable

http://www.heathrowairport.com/static/Downloads/PDF/rwy-alt-prog-2013.pdf

and the weather forecast, they should be landing on 27L for the mornings this week. But at the moment they are landing on 27R (maybe because of Wimbledon?) so they could be doing that tomorrow as well. Either way Hatton cross is the best bet.
I will be there tomorrow and hope to see it.

All I can say is, "Gosh!'

Get the feeling that this isn't just a routine 'delivery.' IMO. It's delivery of a very 'advanced' type to a very distinguished airline.

A fast, ultra-long-range twin (not even thought of even five years ago) is finally entering service in large numbers.

Don't often use the word 'historic.' But I guess that this event (arguably the final proof that 'two engines are enough') may well prove to be just that......

Try 'already well know 10 years ago'...it was rolled out almost 6 years ago now.

'Historic' is not the word, replacing 767's with 787's is not the paradigm shift you seem to think...maybe 'Finally'.

Considering the huge advances in technology... It's a pretty darn big deal!

Congrats to BA, looking forward to seeing the 787 flying in their colors soon (in person). I do hope IAD receives it; it makes sense as they've been running a 763 flight there consistently for a while.

Of course, BA will shorty be taking delivery of their latest advanced, fast, four-engined A380s, proving that for some applications, two engines are just not enough.

I have not read through the entire thread but this looks like news for this thread (via twitter if you could not tell by the #):

"First two British Airways #787 destinations will be Toronto and Newark, aircraft to arrive from 27 June. #boeing #avgeek
https://twitter.com/FlightDKM/status/349856765967474689"

and

"British Airways has taken delivery of first #787 in Seattle but minor "operational issue" is "slightly" delaying Heathrow arrival. #boeing"
https://twitter.com/FlightDKM/status/349826449806602240

These are both from D.K.M from Flight Global.

Lets get these in birds in the air already.

BA have released dates for ground trials at LHR for staff to take part in. The last B787 one is on the 15th Aug so I'm going to make a wild assumption that we can expect scheduled flights immediately after even if its just the ARN!
My views are my own and do not reflect any other person or organisation.
