Awesome Helicopter Rescue

...of a P-51. Sort of. But this pilot has massive stones.

And for the record, is there any better accessory for an aircraft than a GoPro?
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

Well, that was a bit "ballsy" risking their lives and a helicopter, for a R/C plane. Nice language too! However, it was cool!

Really neat rescue...and the entire helicopter crash sequence would have been documented on video if anything had gone wrong!

If you can't play the scenario backward and justify your actions, maybe you shouldn't have done them in the first place! It would have been pretty difficult to justify the action if anything had gone wrong. They were very lucky. Robbie tail rotors are not very tree resistant.

Also, if I was the pilot, I damned sure wouldn't want anyone to see that video.

I don't think anything about that is awesome. I think it's irresponsible and stupidity of the highest order.

I'm not a helicopter pilot, so I can't really comment on how sensible or otherwise this was. Didn't look particularly wise, but then the pilot presumably doesn't have a death wish, and he seemed to be checking around the whole time to ensure clearance and so on. In any event, a kind thing to do.

As a non pilot several points occur to me.

1. That at the final "rescue", they seemed more intent on the P51, than on their tail rotor.

2. At 2:33, the guy In red nearly spoiled it by putting the wing of the P51 into the main rotor.

3. That the FAA might have less generous views about flying so close to trees for no good reason.

4. That SAR pilots have specialist training for this sort of thing, (admittedly VFR conditions).

5. At the end of the day, this was for an $800 model.

Frankly not impressed, things could have gone so badly, just for a stunt.
