So much about the here often used thesis that ET has no problems with the 787.

Is it still at PEK or when was this? Tracking their fleet through flightaware and FR24 can be a little hit-and-miss, but neither have logged any activity for AOQ since arriving ADD on the 23rd.

According to my friend at PEK airport. It started around midnight on 06-28 PEK time. He told me about 10 hours ago that a replacement battery was on the way.

That is possible, the 787 batteries will fail from time to time and thus will need a replacement. But there is nothing to worry about because the new battery box will contain any fire from spreading.

Is there any chance that details will become available? Did the battery 'sag' and show signs of needing replacement? Did it go 'fizz' inside its box and make a mess? Did the charging protocol fry the battery, despite the recent changes? Did the battery fail because of manufacturing defects? Or did any of 50 other things happen? Is there a chance we'll find out. (You just can't get people to give you any privacy these days when you're a 787 battery, can you?   )

I agree with you 100% Karel. I am sure the Boeing Strong Box is a very safe design and the 787 is safe in that respect. I am however pointing to the somewhat low reliability of the plane's electrical system. Aside from those over reported inflight diversions from the media recently, I suspect there are quite a few more AOG's under the radar that didn't happen in flight.

BTW, I am a huge Dreamliner supporter, Keep smiling.

Plus continuous improvement of the battery itself.

Agreed. Of interest though would be the battery's failure mode, ie if it was just a run of the mill bad unit, over-discharged and bricked (if that's still possible), or the more unlikely scenario of being involved in some type of thermal event.

Can't they just swap out the APU battery for the airplane battery, or vise-versa?

I dispatched ET-AOQ on the ET701 from LHR on 24th June. Flight departed with a 2h10m technical delay. First the APU was not working properly and everything had to be reset and tested resulting in a 1h40m late pushback. It then came back to stand due to a fault with the electrical system controlling the spoilers, again systems were reset and finally pushed back again 2h10m late.

Beautiful day in PEK by the looks, that is fantastic visibility for that place.
