JetBlue Sharklet Status Update?

Sat Jul 06, 2013 6:23 am

This morning in Boston I noticed *two* JetBlue A320s with Sharkets (different tails). But I also noted our LGB-BOS flight was was wing fences and our BOS-LAS and LAS-LGB flights were wingfences too.

So this raised the question, what is the status and schedule of B6 Sharklet retrofits and deliveries? (Yes, A321s start 4Q 2013, but how many per year... per quarter is even better, per month would be outstanding!) Is there an online list of retrofitted airframes?

Per this thread, six will be retrofitted in 2013 (post #29).
Status Of A320 Sharklets (by keta Jun 10 2013 in Civil Aviation)

This also begs, what is the B6 A320/A321 delivery schedule for *new* aircraft? Per this old thread (Post #29), June was the start of new Sharkletted A320 deliveries.

I'm just curious as I didn't expect to see *two* A320s taxing with Sharlkets. (Both inbound sometime before 8am... Yea, my kids were distracting me...)

And yes, I'm aware of the LOI for 110 shipsets of Sharklets:

Several photos of N821JB w/ Sharklets already in the database.
Additionally, N809JB is so modified and was noted in ANC late in the evening of 3 July, having operated flight 907 from BOS and SEA. Returning via the same route as flight 908 on 4 July.

You will see a lot of that...since only 2 aircraft have been retofitted   It is a long process that involves strengthening the wing

JetBlue now has 3 aircraft fitted with sharklets. N807,809,821JB. First factory produced A320SL N827JB to be delivered this month.

According to planespotters, they have 3 aircraft with sharklets, MSN's 5312 (N807JB), 5349 (N809JB) and 5417 ( N821JB).

http://www.planespotters.net/Airline/JetBlue-Airways

They will get two more straight from the factory with sharklets according to that list, which will be MSN's 5677 and 5723, though no delivery dates are listed. MSN 5677 should have already been built ( considering AA first A319 is MSN 5678).

Side note, my girls really had fun with N775JB's name "Canard Blue". At least with my poor translation...

Were two at BOS 7/5/2013 in the morning (before 8am)? I was just really surprised to see two on the ground.

One of the two A320s I saw had the same tail as N821JB, but I found photos 'on another site' that show N809JB has the same tail. So I'm not 100% sure it was Blue Yorker... I was unable to find images of N807JB anywhere... But if two have the same tail, then that means one must be 807 that I saw.

Not for the first six (delivered with strengthened wing). That is a day and a half. Park the planes tuesday and Wednesday.

Now for the other 104 kits, it is a two week+ process. That will probably be at C-checks. Making them *long* C-checks...

Agreed. I was curious if B6 is preferentially utilizing the converted frames long haul or if they are just 'rotating them through' to see the average Sharklet advantage?

That link needs an update. e.g., lacks B6's NEO orders. And the list is missing "Blue my tire."

Note: I love jetblue as an airline. (Ghad I just spent a fortune buying the remainder of my planned 2013 family travel on them.)

That link only shows the MSN's that are assigned to upcoming deliveries, so far only the A320ceo MSN's are being shown up to 5927 (with quite a few missing inbetween). Once the A320 NEO is near assembly they should finally show up on there. At the moment, thats as up to date as I could find, unless someone else has a better link.

I've noticed the B6 regi's don't go in numerical order for the most part, does anyone know why? I don't see a N822,823,etc..

Has it been cancelled or not jet implemented? I understood that had to think more about it.

I've checked, it's being "put on hold" because "they have trouble making that business case work".

On hold is not dropped. But he also says that they can hardly produce enough sharklets for the new frames, that could temper the need for finding a fast solution for the refit of older frames.

Let the sharklet production get into full swing and see how the situation is than.

True, about half of all A320s coming of the assembly line are already fitted with sharklets. The number will hit 100% next year. The biggest problem for the retrofitted program is the long downtime of 23 days for the older A320s, I wonder if they can get the lead time down.

Ack! How did I miss that? Thank you. I'm am enjoying that presentation as I type. But I wonder what this means for B6 and their retrofits? I hope Airbus is able to improve the business case...

That was my take in that if Airbus is hitting (quite normal) production ramp up issues. It looks like Korean Air Aerospace must accelerate prodution:

That makes it a tough sell. But how? The wing requires extensive modifications... I'm sure some time could be removed...

I'm necrothreading because I have the same question.
How many JetBlue A320s have Sharklets?

Any online spreadsheet?

I’m not aware of a list but it seems that only the N8XXJB A/C have them. Some were delivery and some were retrofitted. I believe the plan was to get back to the N7XX and N6XX A/C as well but then fuel prices dropped and they stashed them all in a warehouse somewhere. The N5XX A/C were going to require too much work to the wing or were flat out not able to accept the mod so I don’t think those will ever see it. Obviously all of the 321’s were delivered with the sharklets already installed.

Most of the N8xxJB aircraft received them from the factory and at least one was modified with them. Some of the N7xxJB aircraft recieved the mod but after that they stopped abruptly mainly due to fuel prices being low, which likely made the costs of the mod not worth it. UnusualAttitude pretty much nailed it.

B6 has sadly become a rudderless ship over last 5 years.

Their ops metrics reflect this. As long as they remain profitable, Wall St doesnt care.

Sharklets were yet another program released to great fanfare and quietly shelved without intended results. The latest is the OTP program...two years in, still the worst in the industry.

1. Fuel cost is always an issue

2. The planes were out of service for a long time

3. The arrival of 321s with sharklets to the west coast stopped “tech stops” for fuel

4. B6 will never order another 320. Their future is sealed. Look for a CS100/300 order to be announced shortly. 100 for the 190s, 300 for the 320

Sharklet 320 problem solved B6 style
