OZ 777 Crash At SFO Part 1
From doors 3 forward the fuselage looks to have been decimated by fire. Seems like L4 has been ripped off and the left and right engines have sheared off. The tail seems to have broken away around the area of the aft pressure bulkhead.

Could that really have flipped/cartwheeled? nose is undamaged, and initial photos show the roofline mostly intact (later photos show fire damage through the roof)...

How often to tail strikes occur on landing? Tail strikes on take off seem far more common. Hope everyone is OK - completely shocking.

Surely if it flipped and ended up back on its belly, then the wings would be detacted and more fuselarge brackages.

Amazing that we are seeing these images so quickly due to the immense power of media, social media and mobile phones. Damage looks worse in the later pictures, but maybe lots of pax off before fire became intense.

Second hull loss of a B777 - but this is secondary to the injured and possibly fatally injured.
Seems to me that:
- The plane obviously suffered a severely hard landing or lost control after a normal landing (maybe it bounced?)
- The tail and tail section is seperated from the main fuselage, presumably it is still on or near the runway
- The fuselage appears to be intact from nose to tail, except for missing tail cone section and rear empennage
- Fire was the big problem after landing
Hopefully everybody escaped similar to the AF Airbus A343 crash at YYZ in 2005. That's the main hope now.
Let's hope nobody was injured to the point that they could not get off the plane and that there was enough time before the fire and smoke enveloped the fuselage.
God Bless all passengers and crew, especially those sitting toward the very rear.

I won't pretend to know much about the construction of the 777, but just looking at the pictures I'm astounded how cleanly the tail section broke off.

It's amazing to me the things that CNN is reporting. They're reporting that it "cartwheeled", the "wings broke off". All of this while they are showing the wings intact on Live TV... reporting FAIL. They'd be better off quoting a.net.
What I would like to know is WTF happened to the tail section?!

Looking at the SkyNews broadcast, and the video footage.... it looks like a wheel caught the sea wall at the start of the runway/stopway/clearway area.

From the debris it looks like it landed short of the threshold, as did the BA B772 a few years ago.

Do we know it flipped?
Not a physicist or engineer, but I can't figure out how it could "flip" and then end up right side up. The wings appear to be still attached so it wasn't a "rolling pin" fuselage situation.
Looking at where the aircraft ended up, it is far left of the runway and there is a substantial debris field before the displaced threshold of 28L. Looks like it landed tail first before the threshold and skidded leftward.
Listening to the LiveATC archive right now. Scary as hell. Major A+ to the ATC controller on duty - deserves a pat on the back for that one.

From video being shown now on KTVU, looks like tail may have struck seawall at beginning of runway. Debris is scattered along threshold. looks like horizontal stabilizers are laying on the threshold.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

They just showed the "impact point" at the runway threshhold. The horizontal stabilizers and the vertical stabilizer are on the runway with a trail of debris leading to the current resting place of the fuselage.........looks like a very hard landing that snapped the tail off........

Asiana does not have any B777-200(LR)s. This is a B777-28E(ER), delivered to Asiana on March 3, 2006. One out of twelve they have in their fleet.
Maybe he got confused by the schedule displays which show "77L" in GDSs for some Asiana flights as they use this for one type of cabin configuration. They are all B777-200(ER)s though.

The picture they just showed on ABC news looks like the tail hit the sea wall short of the threshold. The stabilizers are sitting on the runway still on the arrows. Lots of debris at the threshold.

Looking at pics on CNN, debris started way before the threshold right on the edge of the water before runway started. Speculation of course but that says a lot about what might have caused it.

Looking at the live footage on CNN after the crash, it looks like the aircraft hit the ground right where the edge of the airport property meets the water which would suggest that the tail sheered off there. Looks like it just barely even made it to the airport threshold.

The picture of the plane on Wikipedia has 'Extended Range' painted on the rear fuselage, just aft of L4 door. So, is it a LR or ER?

Fox News has dug up some former NTSB investigator that sounds like he last worked a crash about 30 years ago and isn't anywhere near a TV or computer.
The initial reports of the a/c flipping over seem to be incorrect since the plane ended up on its' belly and not on its' back. Eyewitness reports are also confirming that it did not flip over as early reports stated.

I've always wondered: how is customs and immigration handled after a crash like this? Will the passengers be brought to immigration from the crash site and then clear and then be brought to hospitals? Sounds like a stupid question, but actually, if something goes wrong and you end up in a hospital without clearing immigration first, you'll probably get problems on future visits to the USA, including being ineligible to ever use the Visa Waiver program again.

I don't think it was the tail that hit the sea wall, the damage is off the centre line, it would have been the starboard nacelle, gear or trailing edge flap....

From the Live ATC audio and other information, it appears that the UA 744 in the picture is UA885 waiting for 28R. It appears they witnessed it and even spotted some people on 28L.
Looking at flight aware, it appears that Ua885 actually took off and left minutes afterwards. I'm surprised the aircraft wasn't taken back to the gate to be inspected for any damage...

The video of the seawall and the debris is very telling. That runway will be closed for a while as they analyze the debris field. This appears to be the crux of the investigation.
