Thomson Dreamliner Diverting

Fri Jul 12, 2013 3:57 pm

TOM126, MAN - SFB, is diverting back into MAN.

It entered Oceanic airspace before doing a 180 and return.

It is currently holding 30nm west of the WAL VOR, FL130, prior to landing back at MAN.

An unfortunate event, considering their long haul Dream)liner programme only commenced five days ago.

Seemed to land quite long, stopped near the end of the runway, paused for a minute or two then taxied in. No apparent disruption caused to movements other than a bit of holding no doubt.

I was once on a BWIA A340 from BGI to MAN that had to divert to Port of Spain with hydraulic problems, we landed long and stopped on the piano keys! Had to be towed in to the terminal. The aircraft has since been "recycled"!

So far no sign of any divs from Heathrow and the other 787 incident there.

I wonder is there any relation between this diversion and the incident currently happening at LHR?

No other 787's seem to be diverting so it must not be related to the LHR incident.

ETD17 diverting to MAN went by a few minutes ago, just managed to dash out into my garden (Macclesfield) as it flew near Buxton (forgive my photo.)

Shame for those pax, I believe just as they were landing, LHR reopened again...

Edit: Sorry, I meant to post this in the Ethiopian 787 thread.

Indeed its what I was thinking. The posters went back up in the Thomson shops too. Hope its not going to be a major issue again as they suffered the last time.

Diversions like this could be for many reasons. Could be passenger related for example. Or a window cracked (had that happen out of OGG and UA turned back to HNL so they could swap 767s). If it were a fire or engine issue they wouldn't return to MAN if it wasn't closest.

Thomson released a statement via Sky News. Divert was due to an unspecified tech issue.

can we get *any* good news out of the 787? or we'll have to wait another 3 years before the plane is finally out of beta testing mode ?

It's certainly all pretty negative at the moment. I realise planes generally have teething problems, but can anyone remember this much of a cluster with another type? It's not an accusation against the 787, just an honest question.

The very fact that it circled (Burning fuel one supposes) suggests it was not an A1 emergency

Thomson galley FM has not reported anything of a dangerous or severe nature with the 787 which returned to Manchester, so if crew are not talking about it then must have been something fairly minor, but as Manchester is the 787 base then it made sense to return to there, so speculation that it's related to ANA or Ethopian events is pure speculation. I irritates the life out of me when some people speculate, yet they blame press when they do it! If, as mentioned above, if it was anything of a serious nature then it would not have returned to Manchester, when DUB and SNN were vastly closer

All that has been confirmed up to now is that is was a technical diversion, so not medical, not weather and not crew limitations.

Eye witness reports from MAN state a faster than usual, long landing, a roll out to the end of the runway, full stop on the active runway then, after approx. 5 minutes, a taxi to remote stand under its own power.

Thomson have said nothing more enlightening than their Facebook page statement:

Quote:
We can confirm that flight TOM126 travelling from Manchester to Sanford, Florida experienced a technical issue and the aircraft returned to Manchester Airport as a precautionary measure. Our passengers have disembarked the aircraft and our dedicated team of engineers are now inspecting the aircraft. The safety of our customers and crew is of paramount importance to us, and our customers will be moved to an alternative aircraft to ensure they get away on their holiday as soon as possible. ^Christina

Can anyone at MAN confirm if there was any flaps deployed. Long and fast landing would indicate not which may indicate hydraulic problem?

Summer holiday season puts a lot of pressure on the TUI flight network (I was on a delayed TB flight today PMI-EDI) so probably nothing much to report here but of course it being a 787 does somewhat put it in the spotlight.

The 787 is the 'Windows Vista' of the commercial aviation world! You thought you wanted it but didn't feel quite so enthusiastic about it when it arrived

Haha quite true.

Would love to know what the ''tech'' issue is on the Thomson B787. Im sure we will know the extent of it should it not return into service tomorrow or Sunday.

Bendewire MAN is not the TOM 787 base. TOM 787s are based at LGW and MAN. It returned to MAN as that's where it started from. It helps that MAN is where TOMs standby aircraft are normally based.

Indeed; SE-RFS, and they're now currently abeam Nova Scotia.
I do dread the horrific complaints/headlines that follow this event.
Even if it's just a completely trivial fault that could have happened to any airliner, I bet Boeing will still get it in the neck.

Local radio has specifically reported an electrical problem which involved the galleys and all but two toilets. Flight deck apologised to pax for extended (3 hours) holding because they were "unable to jettison fuel."
