AI should just put a lounge and bar up front in the cockpit given the amount and frequency of folks they invite up front. You can't fight a tidal wave, might as well find a way to work it into their operations and make some money off of the practice!

I would be more worried about many other things in Indian aviation than pilots inviting some famous people into cockpit as long as that person doesn't sit on a pilot seat but on observer seat like in this case.

Isn't it allowed in many countries for pilots to invite their family members / friends to the cockpit after some paperwork at least?

India is a friendly country and the guest is always treated royally. Definitely Mi Casa es su Casa. I think we should sensitive to local culture and customs and not all stampede to Western values like taking rules overly seriously. After all, the pilot has a family too and is putting his life on the line. Like all this hue and cry about CRM and Korean pilots - the fault is in not coming up with a CRM hat is more appropriate for local mores.

I remember on BA flights there was just a cloth curtain between the cabin and upper deck pax. This way us pax could keep an eye on the deck in case anybody dozed off, etc.

Having visited IC cockpits more than once I am all for the social cockpit concept. When you fly a plane, unlike a driving a bus , you don't bump into hard objects or run into other vehicles if you are momentarily distracted. I l do long for the good old days when the cap would do the cabin walk to reassure us passengers.

I maybe wouldn't speak in such broad cultural terms. I'm guessing this sort of thing happened in the West, within living memory. But aviation has also gotten safer over time, so there's merit to concepts like sterile cockpit (unclear whether she was in there during critical phases or not) , etc.

Whether it is a significant event or not AI employees should avoid such incidents. There are several reasons

1) There are multiple factions within the organization, bad blood from merger, every one is constantly watching others for any misstep.
2) There are political affiliations with each airline in the country. Lot of airlines and their political affiliates will be happy to see AI shutdown.
3) There are media outlets affiliated with each political party, and they are brutal to put down their opponents.

Anyone working in such organization should present themselves at their best behavior but AI employees consider themselves as federal employees which they are not. It is just a state owned corporation, a quasi government organization. They are extremely tone deaf, pilots are treated like royalty by other employees. The saga continues.

Regardless of what the actress looks like, the act of allowing her into the sterile cockpit was wrong, and AI always finds itself in these kind of situations where the airline does silly things small and large that make the airline the butt of jokes.

By the way, the reason Freida Pinto is popular in the west and not India, is because in Indian cinema/TV you have to look non-Indian and fair skinned to be a star. In the west, we realize that there are multiple ways and skin tones to be beautiful.

From what I've been able to dig up, this flight is operated by an A319, does anyone know what day this occurred?

The FAA has always been very strict on prohibiting passengers in the cockpit in flight, although I did it on a NE DC3 in 1956. Generally they will allow cockpit visits while the airplane is parked at the gate.
The foreign airlines have been more relaxed and I have made many cockpit visits in flight, subject to ok by the captain. After 11 September 2001, it was a thing of the past.
It is still something I would love to do, but unfortunately for security reasons, the airlines have to do what they do.
Have you kissed a 777 today?

A lot of pilots I flew with would have preferred to keep the flight deck door open even post 9/11. It gets stuffy up there, plus the pilots I know like to show their skills. Long before 9/11 in my USAF days the few times I flew our flights we always kept the flight deck door open and got a few minutes up front or depending on aircraft, time in the boomer pit to see what they do. As an F/A on a regional carrier I was lucky enough to get "stick time" on some of our longer legs when one of the pilots would have to go aft. Despite security, what better way to get people hooked on aviation than showing what our pilots do when they are working.

As usual there are not many details. According to media it happened in June. Probably she stayed there for not more than 10-15 minutes.

For better or worse even cabin movements are not that restricted once you leave US Airspace. Even minor brawls are handled by cabin crew without diving down to nearest airport with F-16 escort. Recent youtube video of an incident in Russia is perfect example. Cabin crew diffused the situation with a cup of water and zip tie. That should be part of training video.

I totally respect the opinions expressed above and I agree that even though letting someone to the cockpit for a few minutes shouldn't be a big problem. However, most of us know extreme cases where this has caused accidents.

The problem in india goes beyond aviation and is that bollywood stars and celebrities are treated as gods and they are excused for very shameful acts, acts that would send a normal person to prison. Anyone here with some experience in India will probably agree. I have also been told about a case of a bollywood actor that ran over a girl with his car and never got punished. Cannot verify this story, but gives a picture.

I remember on BA flights there was just a cloth curtain between the cabin and upper deck pax. This way us pax could keep an eye on the deck in case anybody dozed off, etc.

Firstly let me address your comment RE BA! BA never EVER had just a "curtain" separating the flight deck from the UD cabin. A fully functioning door always existed. True enough prior to 2000 it was not policy that the flight deck door must me closed at all times and many skippers chose to leave it open in order to create a friendly and inviting experience for its customers (or sometimes just so the crew could easily enter without having to disturb the other flight crew using their bunks). However it learnt a very VERY hard lesson as a result of this when the Nairobi incident of 2000 resulted in a crazy man wandering into the flight deck and almost crashing the plane!!!!!! Since then BA has had a strict secure fkight deck policy! And this was before 9/11!

Now as for your comments on India and its culture, well India has a serious problem with both home grown and external terrorism. This alone should be enough for security to be taken seriously by all airline employees. Also the bahviour of its pilots by allowing "celebs" into the flight deck displays their own individual disregard of company policies which would seriously concern me as a potential customer and I would question as to other safety related procedures may be getting ignored by its staff!

Safety and security is a culture in itself.....you either have it or you don't....if you don't then you should not be in the airline industry!!!
My views are my own and do not reflect any other person or organisation.

Oh come on DGCA, get a life. The Captain of the aircraft is a responsible, well trained individual who knows exactly who he is inviting into the cockpit. As long as that individual is not asked to do something that endangers the life of the people on board or the safety of the aircraft, we really should stop losing our shirt over issues like this.

Does one seriously believe that by suspending pilots who invited a harmless celebrity into the cockpit, we have enhanced the safety of Indian Aviation one notch? - bull crap. I really miss the days when the Captain was boss of the aircraft and could invite whosoever he felt into the cockpit and was never questioned about the same. Keeping the cockpit locked from outside interference is perfectly sensible, but if the crew is comfortable with some third person in their workspace so be it.

Sorry bunch of idiots who appear like rabbits caught in the headlights the minute the FAA rings and are directly responsible for screwing up Aviation in the country, want to pull up pilots who definitely did nothing to endanger the aircraft in this particular case.

And to the "senior government official" aka stick-in-the-mud who reported it, may he be caught in turbulence in an aircraft loo, whenever he flies...

Hooray for Bollywood! Reminds me of that incident back in the 80's where some pilots let in some hottie teen spirit Spring breakers into the cockpit during a Spring Break Charter flight. There are worse things in life.

You got my vote. And I totally agree. It is nothing more than "look-what-have-done-to-protect-you" political BS. It is naive to think that idiots (terrorists) will find new ways. The best way to prevent another 9/11, is to ground all airplanes.

Kareena Kapoor not to bad either but question would be how much space is available in the cockpit. some Bollywood actress are not considered thin in American terms,
